Coil A, by Accurascale

Recommended Posts

I should have seen these whilst waiting for my train at Cardiff Central - simply don't remember them :senile:.

At least they are different and certainly not 'run-of-the-mill'.

As an addition to the VAT query, as I too am implicated by virtue of future purchases, is there any way that Accurascale can make use of their Irish address for posting out as it would then be EU-EU? Seemingly would save hassle.

Cheers,

Philip

Going to be totally honest. Ashamed to say I have never come across this type of wagon before (And I thought I had a pretty good knowledge on rolling stock).

Whilst I can honestly say "nothing in it for me" as it is out of era, that is a cool looking wagon I didn't know existed and I expect it will do well because it's quirky and I expect given a lot of the other reactions, people won't know they have wanted it until they saw it because they didn't know it existed!

Ditto, a wagon I've never seen before despite them running whilst I was trainspotting all over the country.

Never too old to learn new things eh

Interesting choice of prototype. Looking at those prototype photos it's very noticable that no two hoods are the same. Can the model be done with each side different perhaps so that they don't all look identical? A rake would look fairly unrealistically if they were all exactly the same. Looking at the EP the bend in the hood at the side doesn't match where the impression of the tarp bar is which looks really odd to me.

Justin

Justin, the canopy is in the process of being remodelled now that we have the basic shape ‘right’ and will look more prototypical (such that that can be) with EP2. There will be differences on either side, both in shape and decoration, that will enable a less uniform rake in appearance...

We could pay in Euros too.

We have investigated this though as Accurascale and Irish Railway models are two different companies it’s not as straightforward as it might seem. Altho accurascale EU exports are a very small % at the moment to warrant a lot of new systems. We will keep you posted as things settle down.

So, how many of you guessed correctly? None!?!

Well I wasn't far off when I suggested it might be "an open or closed wagon of some sort and will have 4 or more wheels" ! ;-)

It's an interesting and good choice of wagon and would look good behind a Deltic - KOYLI perhaps??? I'll get me coat

They worked into Newport docks hauled by the 08 from Alexander Junction or Ebbw Junction - went there several times but didn't know its proper name!

Newport Alexandra Dock Junction Yard is the full name I think; not easy to say.

Hopefully these may make an appearance on Redfield, although presumably they were for finished steel only, given the hoods.

Alexandra Dock Junction (known to locals and South Waleian railwaymen as AD Jcn) is the yard on the Down side of the GWML and has been an EWS yard in more recent times.  It is opposite the site of Ebbw Junction diesel depot (which in turn was on part of the site of Ebbw Jcn steam shed).  It is slightly to the west of Ebbw Jcn which is the western GWML end of the triangular junction to the Western Valleys line leading to Ebbw Vale.  Just to add a bit more confusion the Area Manager Newport Maesglas (abolished 1974) had his offices in an extended building at Ebbw Jcn diesel depot although Maesglas is on the opposite side of the GWML beyond AD Jcn yard.

AD Jcn is the main survivor of the once numerous yards that lay south of the GWML in that vicinity on that side of Newport.

Class 47238 on a train of SFW and SGW wagons at Severn Tunnel Junction in the late 1980's , possibly a BSC Llanwern  /  Port Talbot to Swindon coil working . Copy of a M Russell photo.

The avatar I use is me measuring the Coil B in STJ. Half a lifetime ago!

It was a great yard to visit, although the WR were not good with permits - I think I applied three times and we got in when I asked to measure the ODAs which were stored there between jobs - and went off TOPS because of security precautions. One of the interesting shunts was going across the GWML from the Up to Down yard or reverse. We could, of course, have done a Coil B anytime in Newport Docks.

Captured a couple of this pool on film towards the end of their days in Margam Hump yard in September 1992, as seen below.

Coil A Decorated Samples Spring Into View!

YT6X3563.jpg.1e22ea9102d62b5383946d5dfbff0c66.jpg

More progress on yet another Accurascale project. This time it is a look at decorated samples of the most interesting wagon you hadn't heard of; the BR Coil A hooded steel coil carrying wagons!

YT6X3546.jpg.e4dfc58c321ebc380058ea9be8ea2444.jpg

We are pretty happy with the decoration and finish of these distinctive wagons, but have a few areas to resolve around the hood in particular. However, it is shaping up nicely and still on course for Q3 2021 delivery.

It will be interesting how the hoods come out, trying to capture the random creases of a thin flexible material in relatively thick solid plastic cannot be easy.

I agree but the tops and the ends are showing promise, the sides are not as good. But  Farn as mentioned the hoods are still to be resolved. Saying that the wagons do look the dogs. Look forward to getting my paws on a set.

Agreed - the hoods still look too uniform, neat and smooth and, for me, this spoils the overall look of the wagon.

Using real cloth, like Bachmann’s China clay wagons, would not (for me) be a solution as they have a “sewn by my Mum” look to them.

Cheers
