Don’t be misled by the title. Calling it an attic is wrong by any other means than the fact that that’s what it is according to Oregon building regulations. Anyone other than Warrick Davis would bang their heads if they wandered away from the apex of the roof. Other than that it has two doors, two windows, nice shagpile carpeting and most importantly a heater which makes it very cozy.

After we moved in seven years ago it didn’t take long before I realized that if 2 inches was sawn off of Dunster’s legs and the extra 4 foot section I made nine years ago dispensed with it would fit in the attic and make a nice comfortable winter retreat.

So why after seven years is Sasquatch starting a new layout thread?

 

Well, the events of the past couple of days just sort of snowballed out of control. It started with a desire to run a newly completed coach build, being too cold in the garage I thought I’d give it a run on GWR metals. The attic was however I am ashamed to say rather messy. I set about tidying it up a bit. After clearing away what seems like hundreds of trains I placed a warehouse on the fiddle yard and hey presto a new layout idea begged investigation. No need for track laying or any baseboard construction, wiring grass etc. All I needed to do was replace a few buildings and thus “Funster” is born!

The fictitious bit…

A small branch on the Cheshire lines somewhere in the north, the line was extended a bit further north to compete with the LNWR for goods traffic. A crossing had to be built to further the route which negotiated some tight curves through a highly industrial canal basin to reach land where a large warehouse could be constructed.

 I’ve always had a fascination for the Cheshire lines which were a bit of an oddball. It had ex-LNWR and LNER built stock of it's own but motive power was provided by the LNER and the LMS. t’s the perfect set up for Sasquatch, thus scoring high on the check box list. I have a new layout in an evening (to relieve the mandatory self isolation if nothing else). The new stock looks quite at home too.

No more waffle, here are some images.

I’ve got nothing on for the rest of the afternoon so am planning on fixing a few gaps in the scenery and working on things a tad. Dunster of course will be reanimated sometime in the future.

Bonus is that all the signals work too and I have a couple more that can be installed at the warehouse end as well.

Train movements are totally different now. All trains terminate in either the platform road or the warehouse road where engines are run round and any goods destined for the Cheshire lines warehouse must be shunted round the bend into what used to be Dunsters fiddle yard!

Good question. They actually have a sturdy boot box that they get transported to the local show in. so I put them in there! The pub is glued down to it's lift off base and that got stored in a closet.

There is also about 50 parts that have come loose.

There is now a loading dock complete with small crane. A large shipment of fish has been unloaded.

The platform frontage of the station building is rather plain but there wont be any viewing public so I positioned it back to front for my own visual interest. The Porter used to live in Somerset and got the same job up north when he moved.

I've included this image to show that there are still two through roads so I could still just watch the trains go round or run in a new one! Also like showing off my DPM Cheshire lines warehouse bash.

the original still stands in Warrington, is listed and has been converted into apartments.

A mixed freight has arrived complete with a fitted head and will need sorting and marshaling.

Shaun, great work, but just be careful about getting into the CLC. Because of Herculaneum Dock  I now have 4 CLC brake vans, two CLC ex Gresley articulated coaches, two brake 3rds and one of the ex LMS  corridor coaches converted to non corridor connected stock.. a bit of a distraction but... 

 

Keep up the good work and enjoy the operating side of life!

Shaun,

What a clever idea.  Two layouts for the price of one!

 

The Cheshire Lines is quite near Wales, and I am fairly certain that some of the through coaches to Traeth Mawr came that way.  No CLC coaches I think but eventually there might be a Saloon, I am sure I have a diagram for one of those.  There my of course be a small amount of goods wagons with specific loads.

 

It certainly looks the part.

Yes I was looking at kits only yesterday! My problem is that I enjoy building stock the most. Another brake van, and I think I'll do another Parkside van and Cambrian kits 6plank open. the chassis's can be swapped!

 

There's two more twin sets knocking about here somewhere. I'll dig those out too.

 

All the time I'm shunting trains about the modeling isn't getting done but I do need a break from all that detailed work.

It's not at all practical. there should be a separate run round loop of course. Funny thing is someone at a show one year asked if I was going to make scenery on the back part of the layout.I explained to them the concept of a fiddle yard  and now am doing just that!

 

Dunster is going to have to be retired from exhibition sooner than later and as you my remember I have plans to extend it. I'll not do that until there is heating in the warehouse and trains running all the way around. Guess I'm a bit afraid that if I can't run the trains I'll loose my mojo for good! Ha hahahahaaaa.

Thanks mate. Dunster is quite limited when it come to operating sequences but the new arrangement will keep me busy for hours!

 

I'm sure we can find something specific to ship to Traeth Mawr. Watch this space!

Shaun you can the ex LMS vehicle by hacking a Bachmann/Mainline coach about.. mine uses some Comet sides and Bachmann bogies

Paid $5 for it at the Eugene swap meet a few years back. I have never put together a brass kit. So this might be a good place to begin! Must find a North American supplier of brass solder and flux before I can begin. I did have all the necessities before i moved over this side of the world but have made planes late before packing suspect items in luggage so left all my fluxes etc. in Belgium!

 

My version of the smaller van was one of my first scratch builds but I got the wheel base wrong. It might be worth trying to correct it.

Fantastic price that!

 

careful when you build it as the kit can end up too high. The interface between the chassis and body needs adjustment.

 

If you can get phosphoric acid  and dilute it down it is a great flux for brass and nickel silver

For some reason Mrs. Squatch was watching a YouTube video about making trees and the guy was using baking soda to cure the super glue faster. Interesting! Anyway, I have considered this. Very handy for fixing the white metal parts if nothing else!
