RMweb Premium polybear Posted January 15, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 15, 2021 Hi all. I recently (yesterday?) saw a suggested supplier for Birch Ply; the poster said it was the best he'd seen (I think) and also mentioned the supplier, which actually suggested a plastics supplier by the company name/web link(?). They may also have cut it to his requirements and delivered it to him also. But now I've lost the original post, and can't remember the supplier name (they may have been in the SE England). Does this ring any bells please? Maybe you posted it? Thanks Brian
gordon s
Not me but this came up.....A bit of a long shot from the clues you gave.... https://www.cutmyplastic.co.uk/wood-sheets/ply/birch/3mm/ Very expensive for 12mm ply, but I guess it all comes down to quality/convenience and service. Don’t be fooled by the price on the screen. That’s a postage stamp size piece....... Edited January 15, 2021 by gordon s
RMweb Premium polybear Posted January 15, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 15, 2021 Thanks Gordon - that was the name of the company. But at those prices? No thanks... I don't have an immediate need - I was just going to look them up, based on the recommendation and if suitable I'd bookmark them for future reference. No need to bookmark this one I think! crompton 33
I went to a timber yard and got my birch 9 ply board. The sheet size was 8ft by 4ft Got them to cut them down. That was 10 years back cost per sheet was £38.00 then.

I bought from (website not working just at the moment): https://www.johnsonstimber.co.uk/ Ply actually came from: https://www.lathamtimber.co.uk/products/panels/plywood/birch-plywood/birch-plywood-specifications
gordon s
The website is OK but not secure. Your link has https...... http://www.johnsonstimber.co.uk If it helps I get all my ply from Travis Perkins. I have a trade cash account and generally pay £28.30 inc VAT for 2440 x 1220 x12mm sheets. Quality is fine, but I can pick my own sheets in the yard. Edited January 16, 2021 by gordon s 1
doilum
Any good timber merchant will be able to order it in and should do the basic cuts for free. Try and avoid DIY stores and general builder's suppliers unless you really know what you are looking for. I paid around £45 / sheet for Houghton Street about six years ago. I would be cautious about anything much cheaper 1
Jol Wilkinson
I use Ipswich Plastics, a local company who supply kitchen and bathroom installers, etc. I They sell birch ply in various thicknesses and provide a cutting service (priced per cut). I was therefore able to give them "cutting" drawings and got a series of pieces to make baseboard "kits". I can't recall the prices but I though them quite reasonable and considerably less than buying a laser cut baseboards.
Graham Radish
B&Q do the first 20 cuts for free
Jol Wilkinson
But rubbish stuff in the thinner sheets, compared to the birch plywood available from the more specialist suppliers. I built the baseboards for an exhibition exhibition layout in 4mm and 6mm birch ply which proved to be very stable. The design was effectively based on Barry Normans techniques he used for his layout Petherick and described in his book Landscape Modelling. The tops are 6mm ply, the girders and cross beams are 4mm ply, the end plates 18mm laminated from three pieces of 6mm (to take the alignment dowels and coach bolts. The outside faces of the long girders extend above the top to provide support for the scenic retaining walls.

gordon s
Check the quality though as what I’ve seen in B & Q left a lot to be desired. Compromising quality of your baseboard to save a few bob at the front end really is asking for problems. Your baseboard is the foundation to everything. Get that wrong and you’ll forever have running issues, derailments and couplings coming apart. 1

Thanks Gordon; my reference to B&Q was purely with respect to how many free cuts they offer now - I purchased some ply there recently for a non-visible part of my kitchen refurb. Anything that requires decent timber means a proper timber yard; I learnt long ago that a straight bit of wood (if you can find one!) in one of the sheds looks like a propeller by the time you've got it home....
RMweb Gold Fen End Pit Posted January 16, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2021 I'd recommend SLEC in Watton, Norfolk for laser ply. https://www.slecuk.com no connection, other than satisfied customer. David
Graham Radish
You might want to have a look on ebay for some desks, i use 2 of these screwed together for my n gauge layout, they are metal framed with height adjustment screws on the legs, theyre very strong tables with perfect loco running noise rejection, the top is 30mm thick, could save a lot of headaches: Just a suggestion hope it helps someone.
