Replicating wire

With having finished my Wills yard crane kit, I have come to the point where I need to add some wire for the hook.

Does anyone on the forum know how I can replicate this please.

Sewing cotton?

 

Probably best to add some weight on the hook end then "paint" with superglue to make it look like it's got some mass on the end - all too often you see cranes with the cables hanging anything but vertical.

EZ line is good for this, It will still need a little weight to make it hang straight but it remains resilient so it withstands the odd knock. I've used it simulate trolleybus overhead and it works well.

I had never heard of this stuff. It looks better than thread for roping loads onto goods wagons.

Sewing cotton with a wash of gunmetal grey enamel paint works well. Wires under load should be pulled taut. Loose wires can be formed into a realistic looking catenary.

Black thread but the hook will need weighting.

Old school. Very fine fuse wire retains it's shape.

Try model ship rigging thread. It comes in a range of thicknesses (and colours).

I used fine chain on mine, but sewing cotton would be an alternative.

Another tip if using cotton is to run it over a wax candle before fixing in place - it stops the thread going 'furry' or 'fuzzy' over time.

Strip an old scart or phone charger cable. Super fine wire can be found for a variety of modelling purposes. Apply blackening solution it looks good. Need to weight to stop it curling though.
