COPISITEE (Used to be PAT testing)

Big changes are occurring in the inspection of electrical equipment that may have some minor effect on our hobby. Although this video is aimed specifically at the technical production (sound and lighting etc.) industry it may be worth a watch for anyone who does electrical inspection for their club/exhibition.

Oh and that acronym? Code Of Practice for In Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

Main thing really is frequency of inspection which comes down to a risk assessment rather than a laid down time limit.
There is no requirement for the tester to be “qualified”, “competent” is the factor.
Some changes to the tests themselves, 200ma earth tests are sufficient, 25a only if desired.
New class of equipment, class 2fe for equipment that is class two but has an earth connection for functional purposes rather than for safety, such as IT power bricks.
Much class 2 equipment now only requires a visual inspection not plugging into the tester.
Racks of kit can be tested as one item rather than pulled apart for individual tests.

The code of practice now makes no reference at all to Portable or Appliance except in the introduction as it applies to a lot more than just domestic appliances.

As someone involved in testing and maintenance of tech kit I found it well worth watching the whole video.

Probably the main reason for the change;

Old acronym too short and too easy to remember!

COPISITEE is at least as old as PAT.

Changes in brief are here https://electrical.theiet.org/wiring-matters/years/2020/81-july-2020/the-all-new-5th-edition-of-the-iet-code-of-practice-for-in-service-inspection-and-testing-of-electrical-equipment/

What stood out to me was SELV is no longer a valid method of protection for eqipment.

I have always disliked the common term "PAT testing" because it stands for Portable Appliance Testing Testing. It should either be PAT or PA testing in the same way a credit/debit card has a PIN or PI number, not a PIN number.

At school, our Physics teacher told us to say "Crackerjack" if he ever said "AC Current" or "DC Current". Several weeks later he did this & someone gave the requested response.

After a moment's confused silence, we all realised what had happened & had a good laugh about it.

Sorry, drifting off topic I know but, saw a van recently

with the wording PPE Equipment displayed on the sides.
