Really liking this , can I ask , if the area behind the platform was omitted what sort of footprint does it take up? , I'm currently stalled on building my main layout but I'm also building another layout which will hopefully be exhibition worthy and has been built around being able to get it in the back of my Vauxhall Astra van so the scenic board is 6 x 1 , I'm just trying to get a feel for what I can fit onto it as I'm stumped at the moment

Regards

I have just taken 3 rubbish pictures from the top down to give you feel for what you can fit in 1 ft which is approx 30cm.

Shed end. Room for three tracks with space.

I ft up to the platform edge. The grass and the back track is the first extension and the unmodeled area with the cable trunking is the second extension.

Mid section with platform edge so you can see what looks comfortable.

Bridge end. The 30cm/1ft originaly extended to the mid pillar. So the layout had one track leading onto it.

Now three pillars with the extensions.

Steve

Lovely , I'm looking to keep things minimal because if I can produce something interesting and of a standard suitable for exhibitions I need to be careful with getting it into the back of my van so I'm thinking about having any structures I have being attached with small neodymium magnets so they can be removed and boxed up so they don't get trashed whilst in transit , I really like the run down/derelict/abondoned things so I'm hoping to create something along those lines , cheers

Personally I think to get things realistic you need to fix the buildings down and blend them into the ground cover. If not the inevitable small gap between the building and ground takes away from the realism.

So I would construct a sturdy transportation cover/box to place the layout in.

Looking at mine. If you went to the full width it would easily go into an Astra boot. As depth really makes a layout.

Length wise, not sure not knowing the length of an Astra boot with the seats down,  but if you say shortened it by a third.

And had a detachable fiddle yard transported outside the cover..

Anyway A few thoughts

I still need to look at it but as it's an Astra van I've worked out that the 5ft fiddle yard will lay flat on the floor in the back and the scenic section will sit on top of it hopefully and with the passenger seat pushed forward slightly it will rest on the partition panel up against the headrest so theoretically shouldn't be able to move forward , I think I'll be able to stop it sliding side to side with some bungee straps

An observation re vehicles. You won't always have the same vehicle so don't tailor the layout to be a touch fit, leave a few inches wiggle room for the next car/van, as even if it is the same newer version you can guarantee it will be a slightly different dimension somewhere, maybe enough to preclude the layout fitting in.

You are right. I hadn't thought of that.

Top of the bridge in stages

Card painted brown on top and black underneath. Then balsa wood on for strength and gaps in concrete feel. Gap filler also used for gaps and to get rid of wood grain.

Stuff stuck on. With a rececessed area.

Paint is the next stage. Just approximate colours.

IMG_20210310_235559.jpg.82864dbb2e6d0bc6a16342ef9a29d710.jpg

Now ground cover texture. Moss low weeds and real dried mud. Watered down PVA to set. Await it to dry. Again about texture and approximate colour. Nothing exact at this stage.

Next stages to follow soon

Cheers

Finally I stuck a 37 on to test a few angles.

I will improve the odd thing here and there.

And then I need to work out how to take some half decent pics. I need to play about with light.

I have left some detail off. Instead of sticking stuff down. I am going to model sets of things that can be removed.

For example. Bruts and parcels to be placed on when I have GUVs and the like.

I think I might have a dog walker on the bridge.

One of my men will be sat down on a trolley skiving.

So I am going to do stuff like this but make it removable.

Thanks for all your encouragement. I had to take the brave pill a bit to start hacking up my previous work!

I am after a BR Mk2 transit or similar van. Also a small flat bed lorry.

Something you would have found in a yard between 1980 - 1985.

Also some full sacks.

If anyone can point me in the right direction.

Oxford do a MK1 and MK3 transit but not a MK2.

All the best

Steve

Steve have you tried Oxford diecast they have a good range of vehicles.

Yes. They have comma vans and a  MK1 transit. So lots of 70s stuff but not much in the way of early 80s. I saw they had what looks like a small BR Bedford van out at one point, but that is discontinued.

I am trying to remember what kind of lorries were about in the early to mid 80s.

Can't quite picture them.....too busy looking at trains.

I remember Fodens and the like but I think they were more 70s.

HI Steve

Try John Day for Ford Transits http://www.johndaymodels.co.uk/our-models/ford-transits/ *

or Road Transport Images for for other lorries. https://www.roadtransportimages.com/

I seem to remember the Ford D Series was a common lorry in the 1970/80's

* Edit: having had another look at the John Day site, most of his seem to be Mk1 Transits.  However, there is thread here : https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/125558-ford-transit-van-mk2-oo-scale/ discussing this very subject.  The ABS cab referred to in that thread is now with the Model Bus Federation, but you need to be an MBF member to buy one.
