Boxchester - Grubby vans

Recommended Posts

Well I took the plunge, seeing as I started the thread on RMweb asking Bachmann to produce a flush front peak. I decided not to wait for the Heljan and purchase Bachmanns 45041

First pass on weathering.

I have waited a long time to get my hands on one of these.

It is about 90% done. Its a bit light in places. But pretty happy  with the progress so far. Gave her a little run too, very smooth.

Loving the van, is that the Airfix kit or a continental rtr? (Or a scratch build?)

Fancy one for Bridgwater yard.

Hi Bazzer

It is Marklin RTR HO.

So a touch undersized. It sits well by itself and in a rake if you position it right.

It's my only HO van. Having grown up in East Kent I have a thing for ferry vans. However there are not many OO scale vans about.

I wanted to build the Airfix OO kit but couldn't find any transfers for it. So bought this.

I really hope a manufacturer brings out the transfersea vans (that used to have the onions in) but I am not holding out too much hope.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve, just thought I'd send a quick thanks for taking the time to post this thread. As a new railway modeller I've made my way through it and found it immensely inspiring. I'll definitely be trying to replicate some of the excellent weathering techniques you've used on Boxchester, albeit my first humble attempt is a SR steam era micro layout.

Another aspect I admired is the perfectly modelled vegetation on the layout, you got the mix of naturalistic colours for the static grass and weeds spot on.

All the best,

Simon

Thank you for the kind words Simon. I too have taken much inspiration from many of the pictures posted by others. They can get you inspired again when you lose your modelling impetus.

My advice with weathering and ground cover. Is select a season and then stick with a limited pallet. I always like autumn as it is my favourite season and the colours are muted.

I finished the layout to the best of my ability. But when covid kicked in I had, for the first time, the time to revisit the bits that were not bad...but I knew I could make a better job of it. So expect to do it in stages.

The only thing I am not happy with is the track. When I started it years ago I didn't know anything about track, building track and off the shelf bullhead didn't exist. So the track looks pretty clumbsy to me. But it is what it is and apart from that I am very pleased with it.

Let me know how you get on.

Best wishes

Steve

Sunday at Boxchester.

All quiet. A couple of vans in the yard.

An old pipe wagon being used as an internal user with junk in. A class 56 passes the the background light engine.

A peak sits on the fuel point engine off. Awaiting it's first duty on Monday.

I am going to get going again on my roundy roundy tomorrow. Static grass time.

Cheers Steve

  • SouthernBlue80s changed the title to Boxchester - 21t wagon workbench

I like coal wagons and the weathering effects you can get on them. I spent quite a bit of time spotting in South Wales in the early 80s.

So I am slowly getting together a rake of unfitted, fitted rebodied and non riveted, grey and bauxite 21t coal hoppers.

For me the wide variation makes it interesting as well their association with the br blue period.

So far I have two Parkside kit built and three Hornby RTR that I am hacking about. I am turning two riveted versions I bought on the cheap into later non riveted versions with tops nos.

The current state of play, with two finished and one not even started. I will gradually add to them as I go.

This is my waggon works area with a variety of vans wagons and a loco needing attention.
