Pipework / bending polystyrene rod

Recommended Posts

I have need of pipework for my 4mm/ft factory premises.  Yes, there are the two "kits" from Knightwing, but I'm aware of the limitations thereof (because I have both).  What I need specifically is pipes in the range 1-2mm diameter with right-angle bends in them.

Has anybody found a way of reliably making a fairly tight bend in styrene rod without it "flattening" in the bend?

For 1-2mm dia pipe, I would use brass tube or rod. If tube is chosen, you can buy a miniature pipe bending tool, similar to what plummers use for bigger pipes.  The rod is simple to bend.

The only way I have managed to bend styrene rod and for it to stay that way was to apply heat to the rod and gently form the shape. Boiling water, candle or soldering iron! Not easy to get several pipes the same angle, whereas with brass/copper replicating the bend should be quite simple.

In the absence of a tube bender,  you will need to find something to stuff down the ID, like plastic rod to stop the bend from collapsing.

I have tried to bend plastic strip but it usually breaks at the bend.  Brass is a much superior material for this application IMO.
