Been a testing day today. Catenary is up in this section now and a few more details added. Its not till you zoom right in on these sort of pictures that you can see things that arnt not quite right. Note the cobweb of hot melt glue on the bank on the right hand side (now removed)

A bit like this one (similar scene too!) where I set up one of the two boards of my layout temporarily for a photo shoot and completely failed to notice the church tower was not on the church!

By the way I can't believe this photo is 6 years ago now!

By the way I feel humbled by your scenery, but I don't have the space to have fully blown baseboards so my Paspels layout is built on sheets of 3in thick thermal board sitting on a 3mm ply base. But in fact it works very well. What you can see in my picture is the bottom sheet which is the base level of the layout (so that I could do the river as you can see) and two more sheets which gives a good impression of height but is incredibly lightweight and the board is easily cut (and instantly looks like Alpine rock, but if left flat also looks like reinforced concrete / manually treated rock face )  with even a cheap kitchen knife and also easily painted. The paint you can see is one pass of basic grey primer from Wilko.

Thanks Gordon,  I think multi level scenery  is more realistic especially if modeling in Switzerland's mountainous terrain. My layout starts 100mm up from the main framework and the line goes up as well as down, I have plans for a large bridge and a river to be built in the future. Believe it or not this is the most I've done on scenery on any indoor layout, I normally get some track down and run trains, but I've committed to this long term project and I'm quite enjoying learning new techniques, much of what I've learnt from great guys posting tips on this forum.

Testing, the lower tunnel exit. The tunnel mouths on the curves are 5mm wider than the ones on the straights to allow for the overhang on the coaches. Need to add some black card inside the tunnel.

GE 4/4II 622 Arosa summits the line with a Glacier Express Service as it exits Thor tunnel. The hillside is all the new bit. the viaduct is just a card template atm, just to give me some ideas/ thoughts for the future. Need to add some trees me thinks.

Looking really good Steve. The bridge will look great too.

I would be pleased to know your source for trees.

Nigel

I got the trees from Malcs Models (my local model shop)

Just short of 7 quid for 10 trees, they also do a much bigger bag for 20 quid, here is the label on the bag.

Couple of shots from phase four which I started just after the new year and is nearing completion.

This phase includes two parallel tunnels, the left one being the mountain line whilst the right one is the outer oval which leads to the yet to be completed fiddle yard.

Time to bring this thread up to date a bit. Not much happens on the railway over the summer months apart from running sessions as other outdoor projects take priority during the warmer weather.

However, a recent illness gave me a stay in hospital followed by 3 weeks off work at home. So not being too incapacitated I cracked on with the mountain on the other side of the valley. Here's some pictures for the past few weeks.

Alls well now, thanks Keith, different meds are having things under control.

Just noticed all me previous piccys have disappeared, with just a link thingy, which when I click on it doesn't open anything up. Is this normal on older threads

No Steve, unfortunately it was the backup crash lost a load of photos from the last couple of years. The only way to reinstate them is to add them again. I’m slowly working my way through the older threads and replacing the gaps.

Thanks for the info Paul, I'll try and edit some of the originals back in.

Bridging the gap

The center piece to the Nussbach (in me head) is to have a large bridge between the two mountains at the highest point on the railway. Having given it much though and putting it off many times I decided to crack on with it and hope for the best.

Here's how I did it.

The gap to fill

P1050289.JPG.da57105ef736642096b29b0bfaeef213.JPG

Firstly I drew a plan of the bridge on card and cut it out, many adjustment until I was happy with it.

P1050282.JPG.a255a8d2876b7aa8ba48b34da253534b.JPG

Next I copied the card bridge so that I could now have an identical copy on each side of the foamboard, this prevents the cutting wire from drifting when cutting.

P1050285.JPG.a30cf7669b0198ab09c60300292b778d.JPG

Cutting the foamboard using a hot wire cutter, slowly does it. The foam board is 25mm wide, so two pieces width, at this point they are pinned together using cocktail sticks in the waste bits to be cut out.

This is the bridge cut out, I also cut the single arch off as I wasnt happy with it. I scribed the stonework into the foamboard using the scriber in the picture. Also I made two bridge sides 10mm wide and 15mm high.

P1050291.JPG.c4d6be336cab6eaefcac5cbaafff379c.JPG

So the bridge side's are added and here's the reason why, the track sits on 6mm board and the track is about 8mm high. Photos from google earth show that the rail top is level with the top of the bridge, so creating this trench brings the rail to the top of the bridge.P1050294.JPG.93781d6b142c6987e863d5b04924ff54.JPG

After painting and a bit of weathering it was fitted into the layout. There's still much to do like adding the walkways and railings etc

P1050299.JPG.db1772996d156adaa2f9c008d9e92e28.JPG

A river will be added underneath in the future

That’s really nicely done. What are you thinking of doing instead of the single arch that you discarded?

Good question Keith.

Think it will be two smaller arch's as that part is on a curve and the arch's on the RhB are straight. I will build the landscape up as well so the depth will be much less.

The other end of the viaduct is intact and trains are running. These smaller arch's are necessary due to a curve at this end with the last arch bridging the line which climbs up towards the bridge.

Last week was this layouts 2nd birthday and things are progressing at a steady pace. This has been mainly a winter project, although it does give me a good train fix throughout the year when I need it.

Here Croc 414 heads a birthday special

The railings on the bridge are a temp fix to see how things look
