Jammy2305
Hello! I'm looking to get an Ex-LNER Thompson redone in the experimental 1948 "Plum and Spilt Milk" livery, as per the watercolour in the link below: https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co227595/watercolour-design-sketch-june-1948-painting-watercolour The coach is identified as E143 but as only the end of the coach is shown, I have no idea what type of coach it was. As Thompson stock is not my forte, does anyone out there know what E143 was, so that I may source a suitable model to respray. Thank you Kind regards James
Ken.W
From 'LNER Coaches' (Michael Harris) E143 was a Corridor Composite. However, I recall seeing somewhere that a complete set was done in this livery for one of the named expresses, just can't find the reference to it at present. Also, as that's a design sketch you're referencing to, I'd be be cautious in assuming that's actually one of the coaches so painted. The above book has an ex-works photo of Corridor Brake Third E1942 in 'Plum & Spilt Milk', but it differs from the sketch in the number's placed centrally, not at the end of the vehicle Edited February 20, 2021 by Ken.W
Steamport Southport
Corridor Composite to Diagram D328 (I think) https://www.steve-banks.org/prototype-and-traffic/390-lner-thompson-gangwayed-1 ISTR there was something like three or four sets painted to gauge public opinion. There was definitely one on the SR using Bulleid and Maunsell coaches. https://www.bloodandcustard.org/#PulmSpiltMilk Jason Edited February 20, 2021 by Steamport Southport 1
Jammy2305
Thank you kindly to the both of you! That photo of E1942 is certainly useful and I'm more than likely going to model this now I have it as a reference. Thank you again James
robertcwp
E1942 had rounded window corners. Something to watch out for.
robertcwp
There were two sets comprising mostly 'Thompson' stock in 1948 experimental liveries. They were used on East Coast expresses in 1948 and were identified in the carriage workings. 1300-KX-EDB_1948_Summer by Robert Carroll, on Flickr
