Popular Post Auchend1nny
Thought I'd start a thread on my layout, as yet unnamed, set in Edinburgh / Leith in the mid to late 1980s. I started it a couple of years ago in OO gauge but over the last few months I've been converting it to EM and added a second scenic board to extend its length. It's a simple three freight sidings with a loop and a single track off stage fiddle yard in total about 4.1m long, 2.9m of which is scenic. I'd made some progress with buildings, a road under bridge and some vehicles before deciding to make the switch to EM which of course meant tearing up all the track and ballast. I've managed to leave the scenery in place and untouched. Operation is with a NCE Powercab DCC set up and a separate 9 volt circuit operating the four points which are a mix of three cobalts and a tortoise. Here's a few pics, firstly of the layout prior to conversion; This is the the basic layout with the OO track still in place and the new EM gauge track placed on top. The new extra board was in place for planning. The new EM track and points are Peco from the EMGS and have been great for making a quick start in the new gauge. Auchend1nny
A few more pics of the layout under conversion; Board track joints in DCC concepts pre-tinned sleeper strips - once ballasted and weathered I hope they will be virtually un-noticeable. Simple fiddle yard; Track laying in EM almost complete, just the three siding ends and buffers to lay... RMweb Premium ColinK Posted February 21, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 21, 2021 The buses and building make it clear that the layout is near Edinburgh. 1
Auchend1nny
Thanks, the buses are converted EFE Atlanteans, every second window bar was filed out, new glazing made up, repainted and home made transfers. At some point I’ll get around to light weathering and some wing mirrors. 2
David Bell
Lovely layout. The tenement is spot on. Looking forward to seeing this develop. Cheers David
Alcanman
Nice work. Looks like an interesting project. The 4 storey stone buildings look great and work well as a view blocker and the Lothian buses look just right. Scottish 1980s BR Speedlink.. what's not to like. I'll be following with interest. Roddy Angus
If this is based on the bridge at Trinity Crescent, then you would only have traffic going in one direction at a time. The tram pinch was controlled by traffic lights as it was not wide enough for two way traffic. Best wishes Roddy

Best wishes Roddy Hi, it’s not specifically meant to be Trinity, more a generic, fictional Leith or Granton. I am though working on the train seen here lifting the Granton branch line in 1986. http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_edin_t/0_edinburgh_transport_railways_lower_granton_road_removing_the_track_1986_looking_nw.htm It’s 47301 pulling a bolster wagon, a turbot and a brake van. To me it shouted that it was where the Trinity branch crossed the road and joined the raised line along the Wardie shore line. I look forward to seeing more photos as it develops. RMweb Premium Legend Posted February 22, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 22, 2021 Yes very nice indeed . That tenement looks great and with the Atlanteans you've certainly created an Edinburgh atmosphere . Lovely

D6775
The Tenements and Busses are fantastic, I'd love a couple of them in 7mm, but nothing out there at the moment. Once back on the layout I may look at options to scratch build the Tenements at least, but we'll see
millerhillboy
Agree with Roddy, very definitely suggestive of the shore along at Granton. Additionally the pub on the corner is very suggestive of many establishment along the whole of the Leith and shore area and the buses tell their own story. Perhaps a couple of 'trainspotters' could complete the scene, although not the type with pads and pens. More the Irvine Welsh type trainspotters. 1
Auchend1nny
Thanks for all the replies, very encouraging. Here’s the locos I have so far, all in various stages of completion; Heljan class 26, livery as it came but weathered with brushed on water-based oil paints. I’ve got some laserglaze for it but not been brave enough to attempt fitting it yet. Otherwise just needs buffer beam pipes and the like. And a good dusting judging from the photo! Auchend1nny
ViTrains class 37. Repainted and weathered. Also needs glazing - must be my least favourite job, always end up with glue on fingers and the glazing. Auchend1nny
Heljan 47 - this will be 47301 as seen on the train removing the track from Granton harbour line in 1986. Auchend1nny
Lastly a Bachman 08, repainted and with etched steps from PDK. This is 08570 of Haymarket. Not yet got around to converting this to EM - bit trickier than the other engines. Again needs the laserglaze fitted and pipes etc.. Auchend1nny
Couple of Bachman wagons I’ve just fitted with Bill Bedford sprung w-irons and EM wheels. Bit fiddly but they give a lovely smooth ride quality. Edited January 25 by Auchend1nny Photos re-uploaded

I then carve the stone courses with an old dart. It’s much softer than plasticard but still holds its shape and seems to stay square. After that it’s painted with acrylic artist paints. The sash windows are from Smart Models. Progress on them has stalled a bit the last few months while I’ve been relaying the track but I’ll hopefully get back to them soon. Auchend1nny
Should give credit where it’s due, this is where I first read about foamex and modelling buildings with it;
Charlie75
What a great little layout. The buildings look superb, and the rolling stock is very impressive too. I look forward to seeing more of this as it develops. Keep up the great work.
Derekstuart
Mark, that's really impressive. Although the track layout is different, this is really reminiscent of a place in Edinburgh, though I am damned if I can remember where. It had a chip shop on the corner, with the railway up on the embankment. Based on the stock that went past it might well have been the Edinburgh- Carstairs line. Instantly recognisable- even without the AN68 Atlanteans (I can still recall their growling engines and the 'peep' of the fast-changing (for the era) pneumocylic gearboxes.) Followed.
