Good moaning to anyone who tunes in.   Having exhausted my UK railway photos, As I've threatened here are my French railway photos which will cover from 1984 to 2015.  More up to date ones are in my other thread , Moves at Limoges.   I do have quite a few of other Europeans railways, Spain, Portugal, a bit of Italy as well as Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany. I plan to do those in a more general European thread in due course when I've got through my French ones. As with the UK one's I'll try and keep to chronological order so they will be just what we happened to see, usually when on holiday in France.

My first contact with French Railway was at Easter 1967 when I went on an exchange to stay with a French family in Paris.  Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me as when we stepped off the boat at Calais, two magnificent 141R's were on the head of our train from Calais Maritime.  They took us to Amiens, then an electric to Gare Du Nord where I saw plenty of 141T's operating the suburban services.  I rode quite a few French trains over the next 3 weeks and enjoyed them.  I also went to school and scout camp with my French host and learned to speak an understandable version of French.  This has now proved rather useful as we moved over here i 2018 and now live in Charente Maritime.

After that visit in 1967 I didn't come to France till 1984 when, now married with two young children and another on the way we came over for 2 weeks in a tent at Quiberon in Southern Brittany. This has a branch line which comes off the main line to Brest along the south coast.  The branch seemed to be mainly main line trains, diesel hauled from the junction by class 674XX's

576892790_Film1984-6B022.jpg.269c45ecb028ea5dd1190ff8cff147d0.jpg

Another one is here.

250168169_Slides1984-A032.jpg.c3c3dda0baf1033d384e1413623642c5.jpg

This one is also in this set but may well be misplaced as I think it is at Les Sables D'Ollonne. with a 72XXX.  Now known to be72017 at Les Sables D'Olonne 22nd July 1988.

558862387_Slides1984-B038.jpg.daea1c05ea946609a5ab837423cbe8c7.jpg

I will have to check that one.

Our next visit was in 1987 when we stayed at Guerande west of St Nazaire. I'm not sure where this EMU is but it could have been on our journey down at an overnight stop. I've now found that it's Z9607 and was at St Nazaire.

1619422530_Film1987-7018.jpg.2c83afce26f5deee4ca6f6cc9f422aac.jpg

The nearest station to Guerande was Le Croisic which is the terminus of the electrified line from Paris via Tours, Nantes and St Nazaire, here a 222XX is backing onto it's stock ready for a return to Paris.

1578239429_Film1987-9009.jpg.57e2a6df3383d37b339b48d0832fe6c1.jpg

All being well some more tomorrow

Bon Jour Jamie!

Many thanks for posting these pictures, they are right up my street.

I first visited France in 1970 and lived there from 1979 until 1983 continuously and again for the odd 6 - 9 months after that for several years.
Having also traveled quite extensively throughout Europe ever since, I look forward to seeing more pictures.

Cheers,

John

I posted my French ones around five years ago, and have done no photography in France in twenty years...in fact, since buying our property to renovate.

Should have listened to my French friend when he told me if I bought s house in France I'd not have another holiday there in many many years.

Looking forward to seeing yours which are from an area only got to once, and then only as far as Rennes.

Keep hearing about the train spotting trips and was wondering when we’d get to see the pictures.

Robert

The trainspotting trips are on another thread on the French Railways sub forum titled  'MOVES AT LIMOGES AND OTHER FRENCH PHOTOS." .

Good afternoon from a very sunny but cool Charente.  We are still in Le Croisic in Jwhat I now know was August 1987 Here the 222XX is waiting and a locotractor is on some stock on the other side.

1575122460_Film1987-9010.jpg.d9e342c6192395797862246063511cab.jpg

Now the 222XX  I think is waiting to leave the platform after the coaching stock had gone. A class mate is waiting to set off

1368704920_Film1987-9011.jpg.a14bfab515b25d9168b5b3690e11b9e8.jpg

A year later we were camping on the coast south of Les Sables D'Olonne and on the evening of 31st July we went to La Roche Sur Yonne, the boys and I went onto the station to see what was happening.  This DMU which I now know to be an X46390 class in Pays de La Loire livery was around.

1892187397_Slides1988-A029.jpg.7e6b0f1f08d2cb8ca5df64c05b232276.jpg

Then a long train arrived headed south, probably towards Bordeaux from Nantes behind e two class 673XX's., almost certainly 67387 and a classmate.

775888133_Slides1988-A030.jpg.c30be5c3a5da8446832a6f96c2c2f045.jpg

And drew up at the platform.

1493005599_Slides1988-A031.jpg.14b38bc21582fad9867c79ae5adc25c1.jpg

That's it for tonight.  I will try and be better prepared next time, I'm off to look for my first Platform 5 French railways book which has my spotting notes in it. Which I've now found..

Good evening, a few more from 1988 On reloading photos after the great crash of 2022 this loco tractor is an X7400 class at Les sables D'Ollonne, July 88.

162216531_Slides1988-A005.jpg.9c1a4e22dea03cc69979e85cdab4a854.jpg

Also at Les Sables was this 72000, SNCF's biggest diesels.

1977670580_Slides1988-A004.jpg.f658097a46b24c03813764cc49ed9bb2.jpg

I believe that the branch was electrified as part of the LGV Atlantique project so that TGV's could get here.

On our way home we stayed at a campsite in the west of Paris by the River Seine, our local station was Maison Lafitte on the main line to Caen from St Lazaire,  The turbo trains of the T 2000 class were still in use and sounded fabulous. This one is heading west probably on 6th August 88.

1442040434_Slides1988-C001.jpg.0e5456ef5d7c9f02331e6e830da86869.jpg

The local services were run by the Z 6400 class, the last of which have just been withdrawn. This one is at Maison Lafitte heading west as we waited to go into the city.

83214578_Slides1988-C002.jpg.aa8fd6c4bcb989c06d8b58f25fdeb042.jpg

The 17000's were in use on the main line trains, this one is passing us on the fast lines.

1063358370_Slides1988-C003.jpg.f6d14397a6583632ce8c1f9e675e9276.jpg

And here is 17037 at the buffers at St Lazaire.  This class have also just been withdrawn 32 years later. They dated from 1965 to 1968 so gave good value for money.

940260662_Slides1988-C005.jpg.7ec5a560c1b169307b939757bba71f41.jpg

They worked with double deck stock with driving trailers for push pull working.

Hopefully some more tomorrow

It does look like the locotracteur has removed that stock from the platform where 22361 is waiting (next to 22381) - the coaches are there in your previous photo - but what is not obvious is why 22361 then moved to the adjacent platform, which from your photo had no stock in it.

Thanks for that, unfortunately  I've no more memories of exactly what happenned.  One interesting thing about the stationn is the hill just beyond the end of the platforms and the buffers. Guerande exported salt and the hill was created from stone ballast thst the incoming ships unloaded before loading the salt, it makes a nice viewpoint nowadays.

Good afternoon again from a rather sunny Charente.   However our tardis is still in Paris in 1988.  The campsite we were on was on the banks of the Seine and the line to the west crossed the river just to our north.

First however is a shot of one of the double deck DVT's at St Lazaire.

586291376_Slides1988-C026.jpg.83a40b46059d7ce076af179ffab508bd.jpg

The next two photos were all taken only  a few yards from our tent. First a 17XXX heads into Paris, at this point the line is part of the grand Ceinture.

382151776_Slides1988-C027.jpg.304fb0d2fc8d9dcefc2e819c2a416aeb.jpg

Then one of the Z6400's crossing the river.

187267057_Slides1988-C028.jpg.ec33570fc2105c282f24de55eff81bcd.jpg

We now skip forward a year to our next summer holiday when we were headed for the frejus area.  We stopped overnight at Chalons sur Soane on the classic PLM line south from Paris to Marseille, the stamping ground of the 1500v DC stock. Here a 9493 heads south on 20th July 1989 with a freight.

132862863_Slides1989-A002.jpg.db9c8c63d9af9dea59be7dbdbb73c19c.jpg

Next to the station was an 8000 class in the original livery.  They look very like the old 300 class that they were developed from.

216411509_Slides1989-A003.jpg.a873cdbeec6c4179de42a31ce273d108.jpg

That's it for tonight, off the the shed to try and do some modelling.

Good afternoon, or Bon apres midi. We'll start again at Chalons sur Soane in July 1989 as the family headed south for some sun. It was a productive half hour on the station as this 7369 of the 7200 class headed south with a freight.

675083046_Slides1989-A004.jpg.375bd6e0ddabf1abfcbef73b92cd9302.jpg

That was followed by a classmate, 7385 on  a passenger working.

1017458103_Slides1989-A005.jpg.3c18c3a30b2cfd5d366dba6d7d6b378f.jpg

We got safely to Frejus and found a lovely beach just to the west where I could, sunbathe, swim and watch trains without having to move very much.   Here a 222XX class, the dual voltage version of the 7200's heads east towards Cannes and Nice along the Corniche.

999013961_Slides1989-A015.jpg.ff07c77daee4db4adf20a75af9b0ba11.jpg

Next up was a 255XX class with a local stopper.  These old 'Inox' sets have only been withdrawn recently.

702285013_Slides1989-A018.jpg.8a8989aabd584c2bdb7a27586fa985d6.jpg

Then a PSE TGV came along.

416103187_Slides1989-A019.jpg.39959f141869b23deda0b4d40442f6e4.jpg

All in all a great place to relax.

Good afternoon, and a cracking one it is.  However we are still in 1989 in the Frejus area. It's the 8th of August and after tea I took our younger son Paul, down the the St Raphael Motorail terminal just east of Frejus.  This was quite busy in those days.   It even had a resident shunter, Y7182 from Marseille depot, of the Y7100 class.

364834445_Slides1989-C008.jpg.93ba5e55f913383d79e1ca0158661e71.jpg

There was a also one of the Inox push pull sets parked up with 25663 on the head of it.

1006400444_Slides1989-C009.jpg.76aa3dd1e6fa70fb23e62bb00cd774d8.jpg

A TGV came ,, I think in the evening sun.  Cap Esterel can be seen in the background.   The beach we used was just beyond there.

1930017618_Slides1989-C011.jpg.3e25263cd2e594f1688a95b747921cf0.jpg

The TGV headed off towards St Raphael.

867001574_Slides1989-C013.jpg.e6b6475448b0ca9ce55e6f0df83f8f5a.jpg

And Paul is busy looking at the stabled inox set as a 222XX heads east towards Nice or possible Ventimiglia.

Good evening from France,  some more photos. On our way back home from Frejus we stopped somewhere in Burgundy and surprise surprise the TGV line (There was only one then) was not very far away so we went out to look at it before the evening meal.  Within a couple of minutes a pair of TGV PSE units headed south at full speed.

1290243994_Slides1989-C030.jpg.24c7ee7f17857a653325a98ac94a9625.jpg

The speed had to be seen to be believed.

1760651934_Slides1989-C032.jpg.058d0fec2941c3e538fc3d61775edd96.jpg

There was no chance of getting the set numbers but even my wife was impressed.  Every 5 minutes another pair came south. I'm not sure if the next photos are out of sequence as I think that they were taken on the journey south and I've mis-numbered the film.  This was taken at Villeneuve St Georges, which in 89 was the way out of Paris for the TGV's.

1395328556_Slides1989-D001.jpg.4d9a564846949f3c37813129bb4cb134.jpg

There were plenty of movements including this light engine.

615695158_Slides1989-D002.jpg.8b00a3f1f114168a655a6b3c9f0be120.jpg

And yet another TGV.

1801709997_Slides1989-D003.jpg.4827c5b3de3ff61cac01cd992641640b.jpg

Good evening again.  We are still at Villeneuve St George in South eastern Paris.  I am now sure that this film is wrongly labelled and should have been July 1990.  However whatever the date here are some more pictures.

Here a n 8500 class 1500v DC electric heads south with a double deck push pull set.

1870961682_Slides1989-D006.jpg.796391d20133b64ab00412f53845ed29.jpg

And an EMU is on the suburban Lines.

458061094_Slides1989-D005.jpg.6e0bc0a471ae12f096f41ea9395c6781.jpg

I think that this is one of the ones that is jointly owned with RATP to work on the RER lines through central Paris.

Here is also heads south.

864196099_Slides1989-D007.jpg.af064cfd3c971158f7cd827e9bef5285.jpg

We had travelled by Hovercraft which was the fastest way I've ever been across the channel.  Amazing machines.  Here one transitions from Concrete to water as it accelerates out of Dover.

1940646746_Slides1990-A001.jpg.3de48b9bebb4ff083873332f996a0609.jpg

And here is ours waiting for us to drive on.

1048293323_Slides1990-A003.jpg.f5556c294b9c608028dd466d5c2c01ea.jpg

Finally one from the suburban platforms at Villeneuve St George with an Inox set coming in.

216146815_Slides1990-A006.jpg.7572f701171760a65ed34d6a6c6994e6.jpg

It's frightening to think that my 5 yr old daughter is now 36 with a daughter of her own.

Just as an aside this ws the first summer after the fall of the Berlin Wall and our campsite, not far from the station was full of young East Germans making the most of their new found freedom.  They were all driving either Trabants or Eastern Block motorbikes and almost all the girls seemed to be about 6 months pregnant.  There must have been a baby boom in East Germany in 1990.  Maybe some sociologist will write a PhD thesis about this in years to come.

I've not been on an SRN4, but Dad photographed one at Dover back in 1973, in original 'short' form:

Were they jointly owned? My recollection, at least for the units used on line B, was that they were jointly operated but that some were owned by RATP and the others by SNCF.

They were fast and no mistake but “only” 270kmh if I recall correctly. Great photos by the way.

I once traveled down to the far south east of France in order to sample such speed up to Paris.

Later, I rode the TGV Antlantique from Bordeaux to Lille, the ride got quite lively skirting around Paris and Disney!

Changing at Lille onto the Eurostar, We carried on and after a while, I was most surprised when an announcement came over that we were now travelling at 300kmh, it sure felt slower than before.

What astonishes me now is it only takes just over two hours from Bordeaux to the capital, that’s really moving!

 I love the TGV!

Yes, I remember  that the PSE sets were slower.   I think that 186mph us now the standard.  We once did the whole trip to Nice via, Lille with  a double deck high speed run from Lille to Marseille.  Very impressive.

Good evening again.   Some more from 1990.  We are still at Villeneuve St Georges.  A 72XX heads north with a freight, probably heading for the Grand Ceinture.

440421533_Slides1990-A007.jpg.3bad5b4dc47b08df30b6b78d1ba445e5.jpg

From Paris we went south and west to near Royan.  On 24th July 67437 was waiting to leave, probably for Paris.

1009756365_Slides1990-A018.jpg.2033fd7ee72d5195990b0d969857fa95.jpg

There was also X22XX unit waiting with a trailer attached.

1185817517_Slides1990-A019.jpg.8462de32b0dfa72cf7df9615ce2da9f3.jpg

3 days later we had a trip up to La Rochelle which had and still has this imposing station built by the Etat company.

693131703_Slides1990-B013.jpg.666973b79c74805467c0460efb016af4.jpg

Outside the station was one of the 72XXX diesels waiting for it's next train.

Good evening again.   We start still in August 1990 at La Rochelle on 27th July.  Two 673XX's are ready to depart, probably on a Bordeaux Nantes service.

12528659_Slides1990-B015.jpg.ae16c2e2716243d0a53cb44fc874c5f4.jpg

The station yard was quite busy with various locos parked up.

1716151338_Slides1990-B016.jpg.a9f0cc2c744458f92b30d37b1cdc45ac.jpg

And 67341 was waiting to head south or possibly towards Poitiers whilst a 72000  and others are stabled in the yard.

1702117261_Slides1990-B017.jpg.bc250ed09c0bc103edf37400b760439d.jpg

We now move forward a year and we have got off the ferry and are heading south towards, IIRC Fontainbleau for the night.  We stopped at the entrance to the tunnel which was coming on well.  The narrow gauge construction railway is in the foreground and I think the first standard gauge tracks are starting to appear on the left.

199251512_Slides1991-A001.jpg.854ed84be4accc63aa8401815ca66e47.jpg

Looking back from the previous shot showing what I think is the connection to the French tunnel terminal on the left and the high speed line to Paris and Brussels on the right.

I think this is later that day at the back of a motorway rest area but aren't sure.

Good afternoon, just, from a very sunny Charente.  The Tardis is still in 1991.  We were heading south through the Massif Central towards the Mediterranean coast via Vichy, then past where the Milau viaduct now stands. Our overnight stop was at St Flour on the spectacular line that runs north from Bezier.  There was some traffic in the station. 66204 was sitting in the yard with what I think was an infrastructure train.

Then a southbound passenger train arrived with two 9400's in charge. 9505

with 9515 behind it.  I thought these were quite attractive locos.

The net morning we headed south and went past the spectacular Viaduct du Gabarit, built by Gustav Eiffell.

We managed to survive a wheel coming off our trailer on the final descent.  Fortunately the wheel bounced past us und into the cliff rather than to the left down onto the railway and the river.  My middle son found the last wheel nut a a helpful garage proprietor at the bottom of the hill supplied some more.

We were camping near Beziers and I discovered that there was a works in the town. It seemed to specialise in various 1500v DC locos.  Including the 11 class, 1103 is hereon the 1th July.

Heavy shunters built in the 30's and 40's and still in use in the 90's. There were all sorts of locos around, here is 4730, which dates from 1933.

Also 9260 hiding behind it. That's it for tonight folks.

Curiouser and curiouser.

We once camped at Massiac close to St Flour, and the wheel fell off our caravan on the N9 too.

No wheelnuts, so we took two off the offside wheel, fitted the spare, (the original was fubar), and proceeded s l o w l y to a scrapyard, where, when it finally opened after lunch, the helpful proprietor took me on a scary ride to the bottom of the yard in a 2 CV, found four nuts off an old US army truck, coned them on a grindstone, and sold them me for 20 francs...about two quid.

Loved Beziers works.

Often found old locos and a few of the Y2200/2400 locos in for sale or scrap. The 9400 locos were lined up for scrap by 1995 when I went.

Used to walk round in the evenings, never saw a soul.

That's spooky. Fortunately  for us the wheel and tyre were undamaged so we borrowed a nut from thevother wheel and with the one we found got two on to the little garage at the bottom of the hill. My abiding memory is of looking in my rear view mirror and seeing the artic behind us obscured by tyre smoke as he anchored on to avoid hitting us. I managed to stop safely though.

Good moaning from a rather cool Charente.   No post last night as somehow a load of slides had got rearranged in a file.  Anyway I got a load sorted last night and can now post a few.  We start by dropping back a couple of days. First off a 22000 heads south somewhere in DC territory. I think it was Fontainbleau.

We then head to Beziers and a general view from the east end of the platforms towards the works.  An 8000 class is nearest the camera.

Then one of the EMU's with it's trailer.

Then a view of the Catalan Talgo coming in from the east.  I think this was Geneva to Barcelona.  There was a special set of locos fitted to haul it, allocated to Chambery.

Here a shot of the Talgo coaches as it pulls into the station.

Then a shot of an EMU in a regional livery. Hopefully more details tomorrow as I've got to get a move on this morning.
