Popular Post 45568 Posted February 27, 2021 Popular Post Share Posted February 27, 2021 I have always been fascinated by the 10 locomotives 41900-09 which didn't appear to fit into the LMS loco. policy of the time. An r-t-r version seems most unlikely, and I cannot recall a 4mm kit for the locomotives. I was therefore very pleased to see on the CDC models website a 3D-printed body for these locos to fit the Hornby short-framed M7 chassis. Having previously used the same suppliers J68 and NLR tank body mouldings I was hoping for a similar standard. I was not disappointed. This is the manufacturers photo and represents pretty much what you can expect. Researching photos online shows that all class members were push/pull fitted with standard LMS equipment on this side early on in their careers. Alan Gibson is out of stock of his castings, so I made a version up from styrene bits and pieces. This required part of the handrail to be removed. This pic also shows the rivets applied with Archers transfers to the smokebox and worksplates on the tank sides, a feature of this class, A second brake control pipe is also added to the bufferbeams, The rear of the bunker was detailed with the addition of three steps and another larger worksplate, (the real thing was not built at Swindon in 1962)! The cab rear windows are glazed with clear styrene, 6mm discs, held in with Klear. There should be protective grilles over them but I haven't yet come up with a modelling solution. The other side showing the ejector pipe, This is moulded on the body as supplied, I chose to remove it and replace it with 1mm brass rod. The additional Archer rivets show up to good effect on the smokebox. Other notes on the build: I found that as supplied the body moulding sat very high on the Hornby chassis and required a considerable amount of material removing from the front and rear mounting points to sit down on the chassis at the correct buffer height. Since I run DC only, I removed the DCC board fittings and associated wiring and wired direct to the motor to provide more room inside the body. The body moulding is already sprayed in black and red as received, With the various additions I found it necessary to spray with Tamiya TS29 semi-gloss black. Transfers are from Fox, sealed with Tamiya semi-gloss varnish. Worksplates were various leftovers from LNER renamings, the bunker one is from a 'Western'! Further work could be done on the chassis to extend the brake rodding over the second driving wheel set as per prototype, I am still thinking this one through! Overall I am very pleased with the look of the model, as a 'layout' loco. it captures the spirit of the original, and provided a reason for me to finish this!! I had no idea it was on its way nor exactly what class it was, but he had lined & numbered it correctly to run on my layout! I just need to give it a coat of varnish & get a suitable chassis for it. Wizard does the old Mainly Train series of etches, one of which is a fret of cab spectacle guards and has a choice of diameters.
