Hello all

So here I am, posting a bit more about the 00 gauge Great Western Model Railway in the arctic north of Tromsø, Norway.

Currently the main sheds are being created and the branchline area. The basic mainline has been prepared too.

At current I use Hornby track and point motors, Dapol water tower, motorised and Dapol semaphore signals.
The layout is DCC using Roco Z21 digital controlsystem and mostly I use Zimo sound decoders from Youchoos.co.uk.

Current trackplan is as follows

Here are preliminary photos of the branchline station area. Station building and signalbox will be swapped for better GWR buildings.

Next to the sheds there will be a quarry plant, using Ratio coaling plant.

Hi all

So work is continueing.

This week I manned up to try my hands at ballasting. Found some good instructions on YouTube from "EverardJunction" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGgT0zQg1s4 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj04VA4cOo8

I found the first video to be very good.

So, here is my attempt.

The siding was done using the instruction on the Faller glue bottle. Similar technique to the second video.

DSC_0079.JPG.a033172bd1afcda283cdeacf6f68defa.JPG

Here I used two different types of ballast, one type that is suppose to be a lighter color on the siding, and a darker on the shed end.

For a first attempt, I think it ended good, but by no means perfect :)

Today I also got a package from Hattons. Less than 48 hours from I ordered til it arrived by DHL in the arctic north. Not bad :)

Looking promising.

Nice and neat ballasting.. ;)

Think with all the GWR modellers on here advice and support will be readily available.

Look forwards to seeing this progress..

Cheers,

Thank you for your kind words Mark.

Yeah, I hope so. I've never been good at getting the details right, so this is a big experiment on my side.

Hi Thomas,

It's probably the same as many of us on here trying to model Norwegian Railways. A bit of a learning curve.

Think the thing is just enjoy the GWR experience and run with it. Get a feel for the setting you are trying to portray.

Those details will add to the effect and there are some very helpful GWR modellers on here who will be more than pleased to help with them. Don't be afraid to ask.

Keep the posts coming.

Cheers,

Mark

Evenings construction crew reports that the stone plant at the quarry has been set up and will soon be ready for work.

A carefull Duck did a good shunting to get the big crane up the branch for the crew and supplied materials with among others a lowmac. Numerous runs were done and a good nights rest will be a welcome.

A nice layout, Thomas.

I lived for many years in GWR territory. And as a kid travelled to school on a GWR branch line.

Here is a link to a hobby railway (scale 1:1) where they run SJ 1212, I believe similar to NSB Class 89, they also have/had some Scandinavian steam locos:

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike! :)

Ah, yeah, look at those :)
There is also a Norwegian NSB steamie working in south England too that used to be in service about 50km from where I grew up (though ended service long before I was born) :)

I am kind of at a similar stage but one thing i keep getting mixed opinions on is weathering the track --- My intention is to "Railmatch sleeper grime"  before I ballast and then dry brush and detail after  but I see your going the other way and ballasting before.. As your in front of me (re that stage) could I ask whats made you take that path

Hey :)

Well, simple fact is that I don't feel like going that deep and weathering the track. I am not that good with details... Patience and such is well, not my strongest suit there :P

So this evening crews along with Duck have been preparing a cattle and freight dock. At the same time Oliver came with a mailtrain.

So today there has been more ballasting done. Almost done, just two points left to fix once I get the last two point motors.

Also a new coal depot that just needs some paint to finish.

The GWR construction crew got busy once the ballast had settled.

The new station has been built.

  • 5 months later...

Hi all

So heavy workload for the past 5 months really killed my modelling. I guess real life catches up eventually.

Today I started work on the scenery in the inner most part of my layout.

Going with ease and cheap construction I decided to create the mountain from building foam.

First layer made and it will now expand and harden over night.

By the way Thomas, it's a nice looking layout so far.  May I make a suggestion though?  Perhaps change the platforms for something different.  I don't think the ones you have are up to the same standard as your buildings and rolling stock.

Hey Graham, yeah, I'm continually wondering what sort I want. There is going to be a stone quarry at the terminus of the branch.

Plan for today is to begin experimental work with static grass (just picked up my new static grass applicator last night) and keep forming the mountains.

I've also gotten a bit done on the slope down to the mainline.

Today's update consists of little more than a good clean and a bit of checking on the construction foam hills.

I would say it works pretty good (as I'm a probie here)

Here you can see the elevation between lower main-line and elevated branch-line

Now you can see the current platform I got, it's the Hornby Maithwaite stone platform.

Have had two other types for consideration for a more brick style.
