In view of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions on social interaction that are likely to remain in place for the next few months, it will not be possible to hold expoEM Spring in its usual format for the second year running. Instead, the EMGS are going online to host a 'Virtual expoEM'.

Layouts

New video footage has been prepared in readiness for the ‘Virtual expo’ and feature video presentations of several 'layouts which never leave home', and a number which appear only very occasionally on the exhibition circuit, in more normal times. Of these, all are built to EM gauge, except one:

The Virtual ExpoEM Lecture Theatre

A range of other interactive events will take place throughout the day as a series of live ‘Webinar’ style lectures, giving participants the opportunity to join in the discussions. These include:

10.30 am           Martin Nield has agreed to present an updated lecture on 'Authentic Model Railway Operation', the subject of his book published by Wild Swan Publications.

12.00 noon       John Brighton’s presentation will feature his layout ‘Millhouses’ and will look at its development and evolution over the last thirty years.

2.30 pm             John Chivers’ new layout ‘Elmore’ will be featured, detailing its recent construction.

4.00 pm             Chris Foren’s specialist subject features in his presentation, entitled ‘First Generation DMUs - Aspects of Operation’.

Joining details will be found on the Society website shortly prior the event.

In addition to all this it is also planned to have links to any of the traders that would normally be in attendance at an expoEM, plus some others too.

Last but not least, EMGS Stores (via the link on the Virtual expoEM page of the website) will be operating as normal during the event, with the added benefit that FREE POSTAGE to UK will apply to all purchases made during the time the event is live (i.e. 10.30am to 5.30pm). As is customary at expoEMs, non-members, as visitors to the show, have day membership of the Society and so will be able to purchase items from the EMGS stores.

The event will be of interest to all modellers and is free to access – simply go to the EMGS website (www.emgs.org) and follow the links provided. While the virtual event will be first uploaded on Saturday 22nd May, the majority of the content will be available thereafter, so you can view it at your own convenience. The full programme of events (*all provisional at this stage) once finalised, will also be accessible via the EMGS website prior to the day of the event.

*All content subject to confirmation.

The EMGS has decided to follow the usual practice at expoEMs regarding non-members being able to purchase items from the EMGS stores. This will mean that all visitors to the Virtual expo will be assumed to have Day Membership of the Society and therefore will be able do so on the day.

Joining instructions for the live lectures tomorrow during the 'Virtual expoEM Spring 2021' are on the EMGS website (www.emgs.org).

Here's a bit more information from Tim Easter.

"During these lectures all attendees, other than the host and speaker, will be automatically muted.  There will be an opportunity to ask any questions during the Q&A after each lecture. Please use the "chat" facility within Zoom and send a message to the participant named "EMGS Virtual Host", so that our host can then be ready to unmute you when the Q&A starts."

Hope it all goes well. Despite my newly acquired membership I have some very muddy cricket field to attend tomorrow.

Have a good game Barry. Fear not, all the content will be available to view on the EM Gauge Society YouTube channel.

Don't tell anybody, but most is already on there now!

Hi Pete, Thanks for all your hard work in promoting this event.

It's gone past door opening time and I can't seem to find my way into the show - all the doors are closed for me at the moment.

Just for us thickos, can you paste an up to date link that will allow access to the show (below, rather than an edit to post 1).

Cheers

This link seems to work for me. Click on "Show Guide" and you get a drop down list to layouts, demos etc.

Enjoy,

Tony Gee

I hope that Kier has been admitted by now. Thanks for giving details of the link Tony. I had an EMGS member phone me with the same query.

The easiest way is to go in from the EMGS main page and follow the links from there.

Nothing but the Zoom link is working for me

Had any more luck Mike? You should have been admitted to the 'Waiting Room' first and then admitted from there.

If you miss any of the Lectures, they will be posted to the 'EM Gauge Society' (note the name) YouTube channel in due course.

Cheers Pete.

I had been talking to somebody on the telephone who doesn't use the website regularly and they were really struggling to get onto it. If you type "EM Gauge Society" you get all sorts except a link to the home page come up.

If you type emgs.org into Google it brings up an EXPO spring entry but if you click on it, you get a 404 error message page and tells you that you need to look elsewhere.

So it isn't the easiest access to navigate, especially for those slightly less tech savvy.
