sb67
I'm looking for some scale 6 or 8ft high chain link fencing in 4mm scale, but without the barbed wire on top just plain posts. Does anyone know where I could get some or would it be a case of chopping the tops off some barbed wire posts? Or, does anyone know when the barbed wire posts were first used? Would it be ok for the late 50's - 60's?
mikeg
Steve your best bet is Scalelink they do a range of different styles just search for their website, they are in Dorset and give good service. They are not cheap but their products are 1st class no connection just a satisfied customer. regards mike
RMweb Premium boxbrownie Posted March 16, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 16, 2021 (edited) Pretty sure Wills do a 6 foot high security fence kit with gates included, it does have the angled top on the concrete posts for barbed wire but the bit can just be cut off the top. edit, no it’s PECO (Ratio Kit) security fence...... RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted March 16, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 16, 2021 I was going to suggest Scale Model Scenery but they only seem to list ones with barbed wire on top. They used to do the version in the pic and I know I didn't cut them down. 1

sb67
Thanks guys, that's given me a start. I looked for the scalemodelscenery posts but could only find the barbed wire tops in 4mm.
HLT 0109
When I faced the same problem for my 009 layout, I decided to make my own (see picture). The posts are matchsticks and the chain link is Isopon aluminium mesh intended for fibreglass repairs to car bodies. The mesh is easily cut with a craft knife and I folded over the top 2mm with pliers so that it was less dangerous to the fingers. I sprayed it with a rattle can of grey primer before brushing on acrylic paints. The mesh is a little over-scale but I think it does the job. For adhesive I used Rocket Card Glue Harold. PS - don't know why the picture is on its side - If I rotate it before uploading, it appears on its other side! RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted March 17, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 17, 2021 (edited) The plain might be a bit short at 23mm = 1.75m or a bit pricey - https://cm3models.co.uk/model-scene-48130-chain-fence-scale-172--187-2168-p.asp edit: They also do a 40mm high with barbed wire top, but you could fairly easily cut the barbed wire off, which should still leave 30-35mm. It is an etched sheet so you might need to add stiff wire to the posts. Edited March 17, 2021 by phil_sutters
dasatcopthorne
Here is some I modelled in a decrepit state for the Carshalton & Sutton MRC layout 'Falcon Road' Old rail posts and some Voile netting used for women's under skirts. Available from Haberdashery shops / eBay in various colours. Dave.
Ray Von
I pondered doing this in N Scale, but never got round to it. The material I found and put aside was from a very small "chintzy gift bag thing" that was salvaged from a wedding reception table - I've since put said item in a safe place and can't find it, so I can't provide a picture! It was a fine polyester mesh, so when cut into strips it would resemble chain link - it may have been over scale for my needs in fact, but could work in 00. (I'll try and find an image online...) Edit- example pic found! Edited March 17, 2021 by Ray Von

JZ
Walthers do a chain link fence kit, 933-3125. Comes complete with gates. Being HO, the posts are a bit more slender than Ratio and they're round. There's a couple on ebay in the UK at the moment. 2
rob D2
I know the stuff you mean and I’m amazed it’s not readily available. the concrete posts aren’t straight they taper unlike the wills version . I did try using the wills mesh but that stuff is a right faff. Edited March 18, 2021 by rob D2

I cannot ever remember seeing round post mesh security fencing in the UK (no doubt there must be some) it must be a US type fencing being Walther? I found with the Wills it was best to tape the mesh down flat at each end and then glue the posts on the mesh while it was horizontal, when dry lift and fit.
