BUXTON STATION & TMD

1244454594_Visit01(47).JPG.90351f000c7a8d4d03982891f1213efb.JPG

My new layout will be based upon the ex-LNWR Station in Buxton, Derbyshire and set around 1980-1985.  I originally designed it to be a club layout proposal, due to the large space requirement, but Buxton was shelved due to seeming lack of interest unless it was wired for analogue operation as well - something my friends and I would not consider doing as we are all DCC.  After a house move, I now have a garage to use and the "layout" space I have is 17ft 6in x 2ft 6in.  I already have the track plan finalised and baseboard construction is underway.

One compromise I have made is to move the cross-over away from the signal box and nearer the station so it can be "on-scene".  This is to allow the stock movements to be seen and not done via the fiddle-yard.  Eventually I will be extending operations to cover 1980-1989 at a later date, once I have the necessary stock to do so.

I will be using Peco code 100 electrofrog points (many recycled from Jubilee Road) and the rest kindly donated by Matt recycled from his previous layouts.  I intend to use Cobalt IP Digital slow action point motors (my first time with slow action motors) and my Lenz DCC system to operate the layout.  The fiddle-yard will be a traverser (another first for me) as this will save on cost for pointwork and Cobalts as well as allowing longer storage tracks.

Please don't ask to see the track plan: I have spent ages, designing and redesigning it, on AnyRail to get a decent version of Buxton in the space available and I am NOT prepared to let anyone else just copy it - at least until I am further into the project.  I would like to thank Shaun, Matt, Mark and Paul for their ideas and suggestions along the way.

Thanks

Simon

  • Psiborg changed the title to Buxton Station & TMD

The three scenic baseboards are finished, giving a total of 12ft x 2ft 6in scenic area...

The fiddle-yard will be 5ft 6in long with a 5ft 2in traverser

Thanks for looking

Such a good idea, can't wait to see it up and running!

I agree and one of the reasons that I have started a layout thread is as an incentive to get off my backside and get stuff done!

Cheers

Sounds a good project indeed not too far from home. A good guide to length of main platform 2 line in real life is 1x37 + 19xPHVs + 2x31s or 2x37s or 2x37s + 20 PHVs + 2x37s that just fits in before the crossover. In later years the station bufferstops were moved back towards the signalbox - I think this was to allow storage tanks to be installed? In the days when the hoppers had to be diverted via the Wessie line to Stockport.

Hi Paul

Due to the fiddle-yard length the hopper trains will be somewhat shorter than prototypical, although that being said, I have seen a photo of a Class 45 with 6 ICI hoppers

This will be the effect I'm after, 6 hoppers and Class 25 loco and banker to add the freight operation to the layout (seen on my Annesley Woodhouse layout for illustration, the board shown is 4ft 11in long)

Hi Simon, no worries I thought that might be the case, but nice to see the prospect of some diverted hoppers being modelled with some trusty Rats in charge. I look forward to seeing how the layout progresses.

Buxton DMUs

Passenger and parcels stock so far consists of one Class 128 DPU and two "Buxton" Class 108 3-car DMUs

There's a great photo in North West Rails Today by David Clough from the 80s which showed a Buxton to Manchester train with a 128 on front of a 108 DMU passing through Heaton Norris Junction.

I am intending to run that formation, if it is possible - I just need to try it and if there is too much difference in the motors have a word with Biff (Legoman Biffo) to see if they can be "matched".  The pics I have seen have the DPU leading the 108 towards Buxton though - either way works for me :)

I've been in the garage today and "cut in" the gradients on the baseboards

This picture shows where the TMD will be with the sidings and station approach at the lower level...

and this one shows where the headshunt rises above platform level...

I have just finished painting the baseboard tops...

All of the points have had the springs removed and been modified to improve reliability.  The next step is starting the tracklaying!

Thanks

Yeah I was trying to find a picture on Flickr, but most of them seem to have the DPU at the Buxton end, but there is this one from 1979.

BTW I think that you're gonna have to buy some smoke units for that extra realism....

Beautiful Buxton

That's good enough for me.  This picture also shows a decent view of the CLASP building

Track laying started this evening.  I haven't got lots done but starting it feels like an achievement.  Hopefully progress will be swift from here.

This is looking towards the fiddle-yard...

It’s definitely starting to look like Buxton track plan. I like the idea of the crossover pushed forwards towards the station for when trains depart platform one they will not be running wrong line through the scenic break.
