RMweb Premium Compound2632 Posted March 20, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 20, 2021 I was watching again a remarkable bit of early film (here, from 33:45) that was discussed recently over in my wagon building topic: (BTW I now think the leading brake third is D11) ... but this time round I was struck by the anomalous livery of the H2 Dining Carriage: Any comments? Penrhos1920
Well there should be a GWR Garter in the middle of the lower side. Or a pair of garters as the official photo of 237 which was built the following year: http://penrhos.me.uk/Clerestories2.shtml#H2

First class dining - fine wines only I should think. If it's beer you want, you'll have to hold on 'til we get to Paddington.
K14
Gets a mention in Slinn's "GW Way", but no dates. Photo in Russell Coaches Vol 1 (fig179) of No. 250 possibly ex-works. If so, then 1896 to probably first shopping - 1901-ish? History nearly repeated itself in 1934 with one of the Buffet cars having a cream panel mid-way along.

Edwardian
IIRC, the Royal clerestories of the 1890s had cream waist panels, so the First Class diners are allowed a nod toward regal comfort!

That would make for a good explanation; the need for it to run as required with Royal carriages. 1
