carlwebus
Hi All Three more mysteries from my stash. Pics Nos. 7 & 9 are of the same red-liveried 0-4-0ST. No.12 clearly visible but cannot make out the name. Plainly at some sort of GWR oriented open day. Peckett? BUT: What is it? Where is it? When was it? Photo No.11 is of a nicely proportioned 2-6-0. No.24 clearly visible on GWR type cabside number plate (and also GWR type safety valve casing) but I cannot find it. Could be Irish or M&GN? AGAIN: What is it? Where is it? When was it? sir douglas
No11 a reboilered beyer peacock? the chassis looks just like the 2-6-0's that went to the MSWJR after a cancelled export order as i write this i had a look for an example photo but instead found the actual thing https://www.steampicturelibrary.com/locomotives/steam-standard-gauge-locomotives/ex-mswjr-locomotive-no-24-12579077.html

SD85
Are the first two at Carnforth?
MarkSG
I'm not sure that the red loco is a Peckett. The second photo clearly shows that the tanks have flat sides, which to me looks more like the Andrew Barclay that Hattons did a model of. [Edit] Yes, I'm pretty sure it's this one: https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/andrew-barclay-works-no-929-alexandra-0-6-0st/ [second edit] And, according to that page, it was at Carnforth, so that does seem to pin down the location as well. jwealleans
I went to Carnforth quite a bit between about 1978 and 1982 and I can't see anything in those pictures which tells me it isn't there. It has the air of familiarity. However I don't remember either those locos or the brake vans, so if it is there I'd suggest it's outside that timeframe. Steamport Southport
Galloping Alice after rebuilding for the 2-6-0. https://www.roxeymouldings.co.uk/product/293/4l4-galloping-alice-mswjr-2-6-0-gwr-rebuild/ The others definitely Carnforth. In the days before they started using coaches for the rides. I think the little version is jane Derbyshire (actually JN Derbyshire). I think it was the only little one there, the others being a bit bigger. https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/works-no-1969-jn-derbyshire-0-4-0st/ Jason
SD85
After some more research I'm pretty sure that the first two pictures are taken at Carnforth. The main loco featured in them matches the one in the first picture at this link: http://ukrailways1970tilltoday.me.uk/carnforth_steamtown-1976_two.html

I know they bought a few from British Gypsum. Jason

The red livery appears to be Millom Ironworks. See, for example, these links: https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/andrew-barclay-works-no-929-alexandra-0-6-0st/ https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/works-no-2333-david-0-4-0st/ Both of these went to Carnforth after being sold for preservation. The first of those links is the main loco in photos 7 and 9 at the top; it wouldn't surprise me if the second is the other red loco in photo 9. I can't find any more prototype photos of the red livery, but it's appeared on models as well: https://www.hattons.co.uk/481963/bachmann_branchline_37_504_po01_24_ton_ore_hopper_wagon_in_millom_iron_works_livery_pre_owned_like_new/stockdetail.aspx
carlwebus
As always DEEPLY impressed by you guys. Many many thanks to you all. Yes the loco in pic No.7 is definitely No.12 Alexandra (now that I know that I can make out the name)! Alexandra is also the front loco in pic 9 - and I'm pretty sure that the one on the extreme right in pic No.9 is David. Thanks for the location. I've been to Carnforth recently but only viewed the West Coast depot from the station platform. I would not have recognised the site. Great stuff re the MSWJR No. 24. Caerphilly hasn't had the BR brakevan, or the AA15 Toad. Nice looking Barclays, though......
