cheesysmith
I thought i would place some of what I am working on here, and it will range from DMUs, wagons, EMUs and locos that I am altering/chopping up/modifying. Please note, these will not be totally accurate to the last mm, but are to the theory that if they look like what they are supposed to be, that will do lol. Some people will have seen before, especially if you follow Clives layout thread, but some will be new. Please note, updates will be when I CBA or something to show, so will follow no regular pattern. Gibbo675
Hi Dave, I like the sound of this thread and look forward to seeing what you get up to, I do like a good cut and shut. Gibbo. 1
cheesysmith
I have always been a fan of the much neglected first generation DMUs (to be know from this point on as bog carts, due to the rasping farting sound they made as they pulled away). These were one of the outstanding successes of the modernisation plan, and are under appreciated in the model world. The number of models made has now increased, but with the prices being asked by the manufacturers, me being a tight Yorkshire man, i know i can make something suitable for use on a model layout at a lot smaller pain to the pocket (we do have short arms and deep pockets, especially when it is our round lol).
cheesysmith
I want to build class 115 DMU, as some were allocated to allerton depot and did get across the Pennines as photo evidence shows them at sheffield and doncaster. You could cut up Lima DMUs, but they are getting old and the plastic brittle, have their own faults in the size of the compartments and windows, and the price being asked for some of the second hand stuff now is too much. These would be easy to make from replica suburban coaches, if you over look the wrong bodyside profile. But just to make life difficult for us modellers, BR did do things that are a bit differently for its DMU compared to its EMUs. Lets start with research. I will be using two sources, the railcar.co.uk website and this book, plus pictures online. This book has faults, but it is close enough to allow me to get what I want as long as I remember to cross check from other sources. Lets start with the easiest coaches, the trailer centre cars. This is a replica suburban coach laid against the drawing for the TCL. Notice the doors line up, but beware. As this from the railcar site shows, the windows in the drawing are wrong at the first class end. So, which is right (I`m tempted to say the railcar site, but we do need to check). Lucky for us, the railcar site has lots of phots to check against. https//www.railcar.co.uk/images/20249 If you paste that into the search bar it should come up with a good photo to show what I mean. And there is the TS. Next, more research.
cheesysmith
Lets look at the motor coaches. This is where BR made life a bit more difficult for us, as I will explain. The brake doors line up with where they need to be, just needs extra compartments inserting. And i know the door for the guard is the wrong way round. But beware, this is where it gets interesting. If you look at the above picture, to shows how BR took the standard suburban layout, and moved everything towards the rear of the coach to fit the cab onto the front. Basically, everything was moved the 1 row of seats towards the rear. This picture of a 116 DMS shows what I mean better, as it is not hidden by the brake compartment. And here is the front end of the same 116 with a untouched replica coach to compair against. Edited April 4, 2021 by cheesysmith spelling 6
cheesysmith
This is where I`m at so far on DMBS (a). Don`t worry, I will be showing how I did it, including all the mistakes and how I corrected them later. I am kind of making this up as I go along lol. 5
cheesysmith
This is where you want to cut the sides. Notice the cuts are different on each side, due to cutting along the doors on the handle (opening) side so as to leave the hinges intact. This doesn`t include the section at the ends, as this will be replaced to make the blank section and cab door.
cheesysmith
This is with the sides removed, and where the roof is cut to shorten it. And this is with the ends removed for the cab sections Ooops, this is where i cut too far with my dremmel, don`t worry, it is fixable. 6
cheesysmith
This is the side just in front of the brake section, with new side pieces glued in place. PS-the clamps are a useful bit of kit from wilkos. Notice different sized each side because the cut line is different each side, to avoid the aforementioned hinge details. Using the sides as a guide, the roof was trimmed to the length needed and glued back together.
cheesysmith
Don`t know where the text disappeared to in last post, so here it is again. This was the door section with the window I cut off the end earlier, turned round/swapped sides so the window is behind the door, and a blanking piece added to fill it in, as well as the bits of extra plasticard to fill the poor cuts on my chopping. But when i compared them to the drawing, the cab sections were too short, so off they came. they have been replaced in this photo with blank body sections from the section cut from the side in front of the brake doors. It also shows the slices of 10 thou plasticard inserted where my cutting with the dremmel was poor. I did say i would be showing the mistakes as well. I need to let it set firm, so will come back to this power car tomorrow. PS-the green sections used are cut from a extra brake body I`d acquired just to cut up (the brakes being cheaper than the standard coaches). This is where i`m at, laid against the drawing. Looking good so far. 6
cheesysmith
While I wait for the motor car to set solid, lets crack on with the trailers. Starting with the TCL. This is the body section from just in front of the brake doors. Held against the body, using a scalpel to mark where the cut is needed. A toilet compartment added. Will need filling and sanding, but not much. Heres the other side, please note one trick i learnt. Where the pillar need removing between bays to make the big windows instead of the small windows I have done a diagonal cut across the pillar to be removed. Then when you cut it out, using a blade or snips, the stress doesn`t get transmitted to other parts of the body and cause cracks or breaks where you dont want it. 6
cheesysmith
And the TS body done. Just need to get started on the other DMBS and do the cab of the first one, for which I will be using modified DC kits cabs. I like this not being at work lark, it does allow me to get some modelling done. 7
cheesysmith
Cabs added and drivers doors. Light fading, so rest will have to wait till tomorrow. Left to do on the bodies, fill, smooth, roof smooth, then other DMS. 8
cheesysmith
Quick update, DMBS(b) is in the chop shop, waiting for the sides to set before re-joining roof. And DMBS(a) and the TCL have the squadron white setting now. PS-No photos as watching filler dry is almost as boring as watching a box opening video. 2 1
cheesysmith
Ok, quick photo (or 3). This is what is left of the extra suburban brake I got to use as chopping source for the extra doors/windows etc. This has been used for this 115 plus the 131 DMU I made (the extra double doors were needed for the 131) When I have finished cutting sections from the side, it still has its uses. The roof and ends can be used with trix chopped sides to make a 303/311. Keep all the off cut side sections, only throw those that are total scrap, as they can be used for things like extra windows or doors as needed. For example, the 131 had a problem with the drivers door, as I didn`t cut it true and square. so, said door was removed, and a replacement will be glued in place from one of the off cuts from the 115 conversion. 4 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post Clive Mortimore Posted April 5, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 5, 2021 Some modelling Anyone would think this a Model Railway forum where people made things not just open the box, I don't know what is the hobby coming to. I going to look at Sam's Trains on you tube and hear how wonderful his new loco is even if it is the wrong shape, under length and falls off the track, I am sure it would come in a lovely box and he didn't have to make it. 3 2

Hi Clive, I followed your link to Sam's Trains from your thread and I was most impressed that the "rubbish" GT3 model fell off the setrack points which were laid on the carpet. Perception is a strange thing ! Gibbo. Edited April 5, 2021 by Gibbo675 Spelling 1
