Sounded like a typical GWR nut.

The Archers is like the GWR, boring, repetitive, goes on forever and never changes!

If you've found a winning formula, why change?

Tonight we were let into Tony Archer's secret hobby. He's gone DCC and it's GWR.

It would have been more intriguing if he had joined MERG and started installing Cbus...

He didn’t look hard for his Aberdeen Angus cattle, I found some Ten Commandments ones online in a few seconds. I didn’t think much of his solution to derailment by adding weight either. Check your B2B man !!

Your map is wrong. I know the line went through Borchester  because some bloke built a model of it.

Hornby black and white cows, despite having been painted by someone who's never seen a cow, don't look too bad if de-horned and painted black.

Hmmm ...... the road numbering on the map is all to pot - eastern UK and Scottish numbers. I thought it was supposed to be 'sort-of' west Midlands/Herefordshire area. The map certainly has a Ledbury/Hereford feel about it.

Cheers,

Philip

There's also an easy connection to Cheltenham, where Lilian had her 'Brief Encounter' moment.

That's ok, you won't be able to link anything to the genuine Herefordshire/Worcestershire road patterns, though that then knocks out the "fold in the map" location device!

Perhaps Borchester was one of those places which shunned the railways when they were being built in the mid 19C, and only later had a branchline when they realised that they were losing out in trade and influence. I can see it running to Hollerton Junction to connect to the rest of the world...

Also 3s & 4s.

There aren't any first or second tier roads either (A1, A10 etc.) so it must be a very minor location.

Having lived in Ledbury it sort of sums it up really! :)   The closest first tier road was the M50, but on the scale of motorways, it was/is quite minor.

However, tying railways and the Archers with Ledbury, at least it was mainly GWR-land.

Yes, I remember Ambridge-

Because, one afternoon

Of heat the express-train drew up there

Unwontedly, it was late June.

The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat.

No one left and no one came

On the bare platform. What I saw

Was Ambridge- only the name

And willows, willow -herb and grass,

And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry,

No whit less still and lonely fair

Than the high cloudlets in the sky.

And for that minute a blackbird sang

And close by, round him, mistier,

Farther and farther, all the birds

Of Gloucestershire  and Borsetshire.

With my sincerest apologies to the late Edward Thomas.

Yes, I remember Ambridge-

Because, one time

I made the daft mistake of tuning there

Unwontedly, it was just after lunch.

Joe Grundy wheezed. A posh bloke cleared his throat.

Some horses got delivered, and one was lame.

On the wireless it was. What I heard

Was "Lynda Snell"- and several dozen other names

Some Archer, Hebden-Lloyd and Carter,

Others Aldridge, and Pargetter,

No whit less dull and tedious there

Than seeing magnolia paint grow slowly dry.

And for that quarter-hour I got enmeshed

In that quotidian tale of agricultural deeds,

Father and son, and all the wives

and daughters, and all the cousins of Borsetshire.

(With apologies to Edward Thomas, and TomParryHarry)
