RMweb Premium corneliuslundie Posted April 17, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 17, 2021 (edited) “LB&SCR Carriages, Volume 4, Bogie Stock 1906 – 1924, including Pullmans 1875–1922” by Ian White The Historical Model Railway Society (HMRS) is pleased to announce the publication of "LB&SCR Carriages, Volume 4, Bogie Stock 1906 – 1924, including Pullmans 1875–1922” This fourth volume completes a series on the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Carriages (LB&SCR). It covers the bogie carriages built from 1906 onward, as well as the electric motors and trailers converted and built for the company's AC electrification schemes. The LB&SCR was also the largest pre-group user of Pullman cars, half of which were imported from American between 1875 and 1906. The 60 cars operated by the LB&SCR, including their various rebuilds, are described and illustrated, making this the first comprehensive account of the cars from a LB&SCR perspective. A chapter describes the contribution of the LB&SCR to the First World War, which included the provision ambulance trains for operation in France. A Supplement chapter gives further information on subjects relevant to all four volumes, including a list of coaching stock equipped for use on vacuum braked lines, Bo-Peep Tunnel restrictions, and additional details of some carriage fittings. The book is completed by 11 appendices listing running numbers, further details of Pullmans, Isle of Wight and British Railway carriages originally built by the LB&SCR, and a list of official drawings cited. The subject and diagram number indices cover all four volumes, and there is a separate index listing the Pullman cars. The work is copiously illustrated by photographs and line drawings, making extensive use of the company diagrams and other official drawings in the collections of the HMRS. Where necessary, these have been supplemented by new CAD drawings to ensure complete coverage of the described carriages, including the Pullmans and their many rebuilds. Where possible, drawings are presented at 4mm scale, but rebuilds are mainly at 3mm scale, and some details at 7mm scale. The book will appeal to model makers, historians and restorers of LB&SCR, SR and other carriages. Like the previous volumes, all royalties will be donated to the Bluebell Stroudley Coach Fund.
