they are a bit like Ford , reliable dependable, no frills

You never had a mk1 Escort, then.  No frills I'd agree with, but the other two...  Mine would refuse to start in any sort of cold or damp weather, and you could rely or depend on that!

Easy one for me. A toss up between the 9f and the 82xxx.

The 80xxx is a very good model just a little light weight.

On the other hand. The 73xxx is one of the poorest. Very detailed but massively underweight and woefully under powered due to the gearing.

It really is disappointing that with the exception of the Hornby 395, no other third rail products are currently available.

Erm  2HAP, 2EPB, 4VEP, 4BIG, 4CIG, 4TC  ?     Granted the 4VEP which should have sold shedloads and spawned many many 3rd rail layouts was a damp squib.

I have a feeling he meant "current" though. Pun intended. :prankster:

I don't think many people will be running 450s, 395s and 2HAPs/2EPBs on the same layout.

It was always the PEP derived units that are the open goal IMHO. 507 and 508, and the overhead units as a spin off. Built in very large numbers, lots of different liveries including specials such as The Beatles, some namers, long lived (50 years) and got virtually everywhere that had electric. They often ran in short trains of three or four. Significant enough for the NRM to want to save one.

Unfortunately they are now on the way out so I can't see it happening.

Perhaps I've been lucky, but I've never had a bad loco from Bachmann since they dumped the split-chassis rubbish. But they do need coaxing gently when running-in, with plenty of patience it works out perfectly. As an exLMS/BR steam modeler about a third of my collection of 120 locos are Bachmann, and I can't choose a favourite, but if I have to it has to be either the WD, or 'Duck 8', but as I say all are perfect runners with maybe the exception of the 5 x standard 5's as they have been re-motored with Mashima 1426 motors, to up their haulage from 8 to 11 coaches.:sungum:

Apologies, I should have said modern third rail.
