UTA Railcars 6 and 7

Recommended Posts

Railcars 6 and 7 were built by the Ulster Transport Authority in the 1950s.  They were converted from ex NCC (LMS) coaches with horizontally mounted engines below the underframe, one of the first times that horizontally mounted (as opposed to vertically mounted) engines had been used.  BR later adopted the concept for its first generation DMUs.

I used Worsley Works etched brass sides fixed to modified Dapol Stanier 60’ coaches.  I painted the Railcars in the UTA Livery of the 1950s and used a mixture of HMRS and Railtec decals.   Motive power comes from a Bachmann DMU motor unit shoehorned into one of the Railcars.

I am now building the non-corridor intermediate coach that ran between the Railcars, again using Worsley Works etched sides and a Dapol 60’ Stanier coach.

That train is setting me off.

Two gangway equipped vehicles sandwiching a non corridor.

So weird.

Nice model though

The twin railcar combo was used on the Belfast to Bangor line in the 1950s but it was soon clear that extra passenger capacity was required.  To that end a 10 compartment ex NCC non corridor coach was done up as a centre coach.

It does look odd but there it is...

The other thing that's weird is that the two with the 'modern' sliding vent windows have panelling while the 'old-fashioned' compartment stock doesn't. A real 'make-do-and-mend'.

Railcars 6 and 7 were converted from two ex NCC third class coaches that were themselves built just before WW2.  These were panelled coaches and the coach bodies and underframes were retained in the conversion.
