Hi all,

The B12 chassis was used on several loco's. The B12 of course but also the Hall and a slightly modified version for the original Black 5. I was a long serving chassis for both Triang and Hornby.

Am I correct to add the TriAng Flying Scotsman of the late 1960s / early 1970s to the above list?  Years since I had a Scotsman , I think the B12 chassis block was reversed and bolt on extensions were added to accept the 60103 body

Here is my B12.  I'm no expert on Tri-ang, but I believe the BR lined black one was the original incarnation of the model.  Alongside it is a GEM whitemetal kit of the Caledonian Railway 903 (Cardean) class, which was designed to fit the B12 chassis.

Yes, the Flying Scotsman used the B12 chassis. The LMS Streamline Princess Coronations also used the Flying Scotsman type chassis, based on the B12 chassis block.

Yes, BR lined black was the original version, until C1971 when pre nationalisation liveries were introduced, based in part on the success of the LNER green version of Flying Scotsman from C1968.

In case anyone is wondering, yes, it is a three rail layout.  I have converted the Cardean to three rail using a Marklin skate, but I haven't got around to doing the B12 yet.

My B12 has a home made (bodged up) pickup under the tender. She manages 5 HD coaches and does about a scale 150mph.

A part started Caly 439 class from an Hornby M7, (a chimney!) which i have finished off. New dome, wider cab aperture, front spectacle plates, wider side tanks, westo pump, h-rails, s-valves, whistle, coal, lined and a light weathering..... and a bit of fun with the reference photo! :D Sorry, now back to the B12's?

Hi all,

I had to post this here as the similarities on the front footplate between what has been done to the above B12 and this one I have just bought are too close. I was wondering if the same person had upgraded this one. Barclay could you post some more pictures of the B12 for comparison.

Looks like a Mainline (Palitoy) type coupling on the tender.

Hi Ruffnut,

Yes it is a Mainline coupling, I had to make a new mounting to fit this coupling as the engine only had 3 link couplings and the original mounting had been removed.

Sorry that's all I have. I don't know if he still has it even. But I might see him tomorrow at our EMGS meeting so I will take a snap of this to show him!

I have recently acquired my first Hornby B12 as a keeper. She was a bit knocked about body wise but tender and chassis were fine so fitted a nice body out of the spares box, as I’ve used loads of these over the years under Gem and Wills Whitemetal kits including a couple of Cardeans. The bashed about body off this latest one is minus its smoke box door and I could do with one. The bashed about body is on its way to becoming a Great Western loco!!!! Yes and not freelance either. James Holden it seems tome may have been behind the experimental GWR Earl Cawdor and a quick look at Cyril Freezers drawing of Earl Cawdor and the B12 show lots of likeness. I’ve already shortened the body of the B12 and plan to use a Ks footplate and outside frames to add weight where it is needed on a 440.  Should be some straightforward plastic surgery.
