Hi all.

I need to buy some NS and brass sheet for a couple loco builds, but Eileen's is still not shipping abroad, so what alternatives are there?

All the best,

Amanda

I'm sure you could source this locally (NL). Check conrad.nl or dekwast.nl.

Dutch prices are outrageous. I was quoted over 100 euro for a 30x30 cm sheet of .5mm plate. Ill check the above places!

I've used this supplier for various different metals:

http://www.metalsmith.co.uk/metals-materials.htm

610 x 305 x 0.45mm nickel silver sheet is quoted at 23.35 £St.  Don't know if they will supply outside UK but they've been very helpful in the past so might be worth an email or call.

Unless Barry has changed policy recently, he was quite happy to send to a friend in OZ.

So I would be surprised if he wouldn't send to Europe.

I've bought brass and n/s sheet and shapes from K&S Metals. They are a U.S. based supplier but are retailed in model and hobby shops in many countries - even in the Isle of Man ! I Googled "K&S Metals nl " and see there are several stockists of K&S in the Netherlands e.g. https://www.modelbouwshopnederland.nl/en_GB/c-1724856/flexible-metal-k-s-metals/ or, specifically, for brass sheet https://www.modelbouwshopnederland.nl/a-6817486/messingplaat/messingplaat-200x200x0-5-mm-ae7755-02/#descripti

Hope this helps,

Ray.

Hi Ray

I buy my brass and styrene from modellbouwshop. Sadly he doesn't carry any nickel silver. I guess it is much preferred to brass for loco frames?

I'm not really sure why some kit manufactures seem to prefer nickel silver to brass for frames.  I've used both and haven't found brass any less effective.  Some grades of brass are harder than others but the 0.7 mm sheet normally available from a model supplier should be perfectly adequate.  The strength/rigidity of the frame depends more on the number and location of the spacers.

Cheers,

Ray.

When designing a kit you can specify material and thickness but not the specific material specification, So .015" n/s tends to be the preferred option for 4mm frames owing to its  stiffness.

I prefer to design 4mm loco kits in n/s as it solders more easily, but there are times when brass is better as it can be formed more easily.
