RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 18, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 18, 2021 There is at least one C&NW cab unit, 401 p,us a D&RGW B unit. I'll have to dig through some books in the shed. The nose of the cab unit is definitely C&NW. Jamie

Dr Gerbil-Fritters
The UP inherited the CNW heritage F7s... three A units. Sadly left to rot, although 2 are now on some tourist pike somewhere. The F7B is DRGW. I don't know why it ended up at Cheyenne. Perhaps at one time they were planning on a heritage F7A-F7B-F7A. The Es are nice but a trio of late model Fs would be even nicer.

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 19, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 19, 2021 (edited) The B unit is definitely D&RGW. I seem to remember that it was at Burnham shops when UP took over SP and D&RGW and got brought to Cheyenne. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 19, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 19, 2021 (edited) Good morning from a rather sunny Charente. The Tardis is still in Cheyenne and it's 18th August 1999. Just time enough for one last shot of an eastbound in the yard before we set off to the airport. Unfortunately when we arrived home the next day there was a rather nasty phone call from work and a 2 and a half year nightmare began. However I managed to retire with my pension intact and my head held high, in July 2002. Karma does exist as the instigator of it all later fell down some aircraft steps and spent 6 months flat on his back in hospital after being sacked from his job as a Deputy Chief Constable. He did get mobile again. Anyway I got more time with the family and in 2004 Beth and I celebrated our silver wedding by going back to Canada where we had spent our honeymoon in 1979. On 28th July we flew out to Vancouver courtesy of a rather cramped Air Transat plane. 13 hours later, after a stop at Calgary, we were over the southern suburbs of Vancouver where some trains were visible. We had decided to go on our first cruise. 6 months earlier Beth had lost the use of her legs bur after 4 months in hospital she was on the mend and we travelled with a buggy. The cruise company had re-allocated our chosen cabin and a long argument ensued in the terminal. It worked out as they put us in a penthouse suite and we got spoilt for the whole week. As we left Vancouver the sulphur terminal was still in operation. I'd last seen the sulphur trains at Field in 1978. As we headed out under the Lions Gate Bridge some CN trains and at least one BCR liveried loco were visible on the northern shore. Two more BCR locos were then seen on a train heading into town. No more trains for a couple of days whilst we sailed north, and visited Juneau though we did see Humpback whales. However on 1st June this was the sight we woke up to in Skagway. RMweb Premium Mike_Walker Posted July 19, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 19, 2021 Pretty sure its the CP Vancouver Intermodal Facility just east of Coquitlam Yard and the Pitt River and the crossing in the middle is Harris Road. It would be directly below the flightpath for something approaching the airport from the east. 1

The usual approach from the east is now south of the Fraser, and Jamie had said ‘the southern suburbs’, so I was looking in the wrong place. If Jamie does post another picture, it would be interesting to see which way they went from there. (Jamie, there’s no need to do that, now that Mike’s identified the location.) The flight paths round the eastern side of Vancouver have changed over time. There used to be one over our house to/from the northeast, with aircraft passing over at 5000 feet plus - I’ve seen literally one aircraft on it in the last ten years and that one registered with me because it was so unusual by then. Anyway, after this diversion into my OCD - back to the trains!

Anyway, after this diversion into my OCD - back to the trains! No problem at all Pete. Here are a few more from the flight. First the plane, an Air Transat, Airbus I believe, very cramped. We weren't allowed off at Calgary just sat on the ground whilst a few got off and they refuelled. After hitting the standing wave as we crossed the front range, it was reasonably smooth. There are some lakes that we passed over here. Then a river came into sight. Then the photo of the rail yard. And finally the last one before landing. The ship we were on was MS Zaandam. I believe the first picture is looking south across the Fraser River with Maple Ridge on this side and Derby Reach Regional Park on the far side. You can see a campsite in the park right on the shore with tents or trailers visible. The CP mainline is right on the riverbank on the near side of the river, not really visible as it’s in under low cliffs. The CN mainline cuts off that bend of the river on the far side. Second picture is of the Alex Fraser bridge across the most southerly arm of the Fraser River. BNSF line south to the US curving south on the far bank, just left of the bridge. A CN line branches off this going right, under the bridge approaches, to serve industries further west. On the near bank is a Southern Railway of BC line. There is now a barge slip off this line, just right of the bridge, obviously built since you took the picture.
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 20, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 20, 2021 (edited) Good afternoon, just from a sunny and rather warm Charente. Late rising and early trip to the supermarket meant no time for the usual breakfast time update. Anyway the Tardis is is still in Skagway and it's 1st June 2004. Skagway is an amazing place. A little piece of the USA with no land transport apart to the Yukon Territory with the Alaska Marine Highway bringing stuff in by sea. The population drops dramatically in the winter and the inhabitants get some sort of bonus for staying there all year round. Cruise ships call on certain days of the week with berths or 5 or 6. at least 4 of these have their own sidings. The trains up the White Pass route leave in three flights with time for all flights to complete round trips. Some go on further in to the Yukon territory and others turn back before the summit. All carefully choreographed. We could see one train on the easternmost berth. 4 of the shovel nose Alco units. We had tickets for the 2nd set of trips and Beth and I went round town, with her on her scooter. Thsi was by the end of main strett. Once the early flights returned some of the locos needed refuelling. These are I believe some of the rather younger GE's. Another set of shovel noses arrived. These are the standard coaches. 10 or more to a train. Our train ready for boarding. You can't get much closer to the ship. More tomorrow. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 21, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 21, 2021 (edited) Good moaning from a rather warm Charente. The Tardis is still in Skagway on 1st June 2004. We set off and went round the east side of town. Apparently the tracks used to go up the main street. As we got pastthe town the shops complex appeared. Various things parked outside including a steam loco. I got a better sight of it shortly afterwards. I think that this is a loco brought up to Skagway during WW2 when traffic was very heavy. An alternative form of transport was also seen. And a solitary caboose. Various old (WW1 era) steam locos were dumped along the side of the river as flood defences. I have a vague notion that one has been rescued recently. Jamie Edited April 11, 2022 by jamie92208
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 22, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 22, 2021 (edited) Good morning. It's going to be another warm one here but the Tardis is still a tad further north with snow covered hills in sight. It's still 1st June 2004 and we are heading up from Skagway towards the White Pass. Our two GE's kept plodding up. Fairly soon there was a good view back down to Skagway. On the way up the best views were taken up by people with new fangled digital cameras that took an age to take a photo. My old OM1 was point and press. Very frustrating. The route went down a couple of side valleys to gain height and this was the view across one of them. Before long one of the trains in front of us came into view. And this was us crossing the viaduct shown earlier. More tomorrow. Jamie Edited April 11, 2022 by jamie92208
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 23, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 23, 2021 (edited) Good morning again from a rather warm and clammy Charente. The Tardis is still on the White Pass and Yukon on 1st June 2004. We saw a spectacular trestle ahead. However it was rather obviously out of use when we passed. Below us was the White Pass and thought of Charlie Chaplin in Gold Rush came to mind. The mounties wouldn't let any prospectors over the border until they had carried a ton of supplies up here. We stopped alongside the summit lake and a southbound train that had been further up the line passed us. Our locos then ran round as another train was held. Then it was off back down and as the slow digital photographers had taken their pictures I spent most of the return trip out on the vestibule. The remains of what I think is a WW2 era wreck were below us at one point. And we carried on downhill. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 24, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 24, 2021 (edited) Good morning from the Charente. However in Tardis land it's still 1st June 2004 and our train is heading back down the hill towards Skagway from the White Pass. I was able to get this shot of our locos. Down at Skagway the old steam locos were still there. And the third tranche of trains started to come back down the hill. I did find this in the weeds at the back of town. I think that it is now a runner. And a procession of trains continued to cross the level crossing in town. And another. We later found out that the musicians on the cruise ships all tend to congregate in one of the pubs on the left and had impromptu jam sessions. The station had a few models for purchase and a loco and coaches somehow found their way into my luggage. It's better not to talk about the scale/gauge though. caradoc
That's one hell of a bird strike on the loco in the third picture ! (They always remind me of our own Class 33 for some reason). Great photos and background Jamie, thanks. 1

Their 2nd steamer is No 40 that had worked in Guatemala but it seems that 195 has had a repaint. Nice that they still use some steam though. Anyway the Tardis is moving on. We spent our wedding anniversary cruising round Glacier Bay, watching humpback and killer whales as well as sealions. At one point the captain stopped the ship and rotated it through 180 degrees so that everyone could see a particular whale pod. Then another 180 and back on course. not bad for a 70,000 ton vessel. Anyway on the 3rd we visited Ketchikan and tried another form of transport The amphibious tour of the harbour and town was fun. However I wouldn't have liked to be the delivery drivers who drove it to the ferry at Seattle from Rochester New York at 30 mph. The other form of transport was of course the seaplane. Here one was shunting a raft of it's siblings into the dock. We then headed down the inside passage to Vancouver where we spent a couple of days. We visited my remaining aunt a couple of times. One evening she took us to a nice restaurant in Stanley Park where we saw the totem poles. That was when the incident related earlier took place when I was reminded rather forcefully that it wasn't Beth who had been with me when I last saw them. It's now the 7th June and we spent some time in downtown Vancouver. Not much activity in the waterfront yard but there were some stack trains visible. We then took Marj out to the Cannery restaurant and on the way passed these CP locos. This was the view from the restaurant. Which has now closed unfortunately. Anyway some more tomorrow and I will try and find some photos of my WP&Y models. Jamie Edited April 11, 2022 by jamie92208
