RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted January 11, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 11, 2022 (edited) Good morning from the Charente. on 21st May 2019 the tardis was still in Cheyenne, WY. It did clear enough in the morning for us to nip out and do a bit of shopping but in the afternoon we stayed in. Here a westbound is heading past. Later that afternoon an eastbound came in with a rather different consist of power. Tucked in behind the first two 4000+ HP diesel electrics were a couple of Gensets. I think that we saw this pair south of Salt Lake City a few days earlier. I asked on the Loconotes forum where they would be heading and the reply was for storage and possible sale. I then moved to the south side of the tracks and this westbound came under the C & S overpass. The motel can be seen under the left hand signal head. mdvle
The Gensets were an interesting idea that sadly just didn't work in practice, and they didn't really last very long. 2

Jamie, there are technically two separate cities in the Wendover area. On the Utah side of the border, it is the City of Wendover. On the other side of the border, it's the City of West Wendover, Nevada where the casinos are at. Wendell Idaho, USA 1

They are quite strangec ooking beasts. I suspect that like somevother attempts the pkacing of road vehicle technology on a rail vehicle didn't go as well as they hoped. It was good to at least see them. Jamie
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted January 12, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 12, 2022 (edited) Good moaning from a sunny but rather cool Charente. The Tardis is still in Cheyenne, WY and it's now the 22nd of May 2019 though you wouldn't think that by the weather. We had enjoyed our last night in the Days Inn. There was an= restaurant called The Outlaw, just behind it, vaguely Australian themed but good food and excellent service. The added bonus was that I invariably got another 6 or 7 loco numbers whilst we walked back as yet another train would be approaching the grade crossing as we walked back. The next morning the wifi was still causing problems but a kind receptionist allowed me to use her phone to do our check in. This was complicated by the fact that our flight was a freebie on airmiles with American but we were ticketed on British Airways. Anyway, once that was done I managed to escape trackside for a short while. At 11.18 a westbound on track 4 behind 4105, 4797 and a CSX unit appeared under the bridge. The CSX unit was 7885. At 11.37 another westbound appeared led by 8839. 8603 was behind it then a very long train of empty flats with cradles on them that looked as if they were for wind turbine parts. BNSF got in on the act with a train on the overbridge. Then at 12.20 another westbound came past behind 6469, 5144 and 7300. That was the last UP train I saw. Then it was time to head for Denver International and hand the hire car back in. That went very well and then we booked in for our flight back to Paris. The London leg was on this, BA 747-400 G-BN4N which took us to the chaos of Heathrow where we changed terminals. That was chaotic but made better by a very interesting chat with a retired US Naval officer and his wife. He had ended up as the XO on USS Wisconsin in the Gulf War. There are not many folk around who have fired 16" naval guns in anger. Then we boarded a BA Airbus A319 for our flight back to Paris, which was rather bumpy. I seem to remember that we were longer taxiing at the two airports than we were in the air. Excellent assistance at CDG then TGV back to Poitiers where our neighbours met us. Around the world in 47 days. That's the end of my American pictures. It's about 8 months since I started uploading them and have thoroughly enjoyed the process. I hope that you have enjoyed the ride. You never know, if my dream of seeing a Big Boy in steam can be fulfilled perhaps I will be allowed another trip across the pond. I suppose that miracles can sometimes happen. In the middle of this last trip we became grandparents for the first time and were about as far away from Leeds as it's possible to be, somewhere in the middle of the Pacific near the 180 degree Meridian and south of the equator. The young lady is now a delightful nearly 3 yr old who I will have to try and take trainspotting. I have a railway to build for her before the summer. The Lurker
thanks for your long trip down memory lane. There have been some excellent shots and some that have made me recall our trips. And the shots of the Big Boy...! 8

Whilst I have seen US trains, it was only ever from the edges of the country - being in the Merch at the time. The interior of the USA is a mystery to me. 2

The interior of the USA is a mystery to me. I think it's a mystery to many Americans. I still have photos of other railway systems. Several European countries, Germany, Benelux, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece plus Tunisia and Egypt in Africa. Also a few of Australia and a couple of Pacific Islands. I'll probably do a general European thread in chronological order so it will skip about a bit, then a short Rest of the World. Nothing for the next week or so though. ChrisH-UK
I agree with Neil, Jamie, pH and Wendell (quoted below to preserve context) and like DaveF I'm inspired to visit some of the places featured (fingers crossed for Feb 16th) I can't believe this thread's been going 8 months. I'm going to have to find something constructive to do now On 13/01/2022 at 16:57, New Haven Neil said: I'm gutted it's finished! Thanks for posting these Jamie, it's been amazing. I was lucky enough to visit other bits apart from the US such as Canada and El Salvador and working through the photos has brought back some lovely memories. As to the rest of my railway photos I've had a think and having thunk have decided to do a random European thread in chronological order. I'll probably start in early February. That will just leave a fairly short Rest of the World thread for Africa, (Tunisia and Egypt) plus Australia, Fiji and Hawaii. Now back to thoughts of , ' what did happen to Heidi from Wisconsin and Beverley from Vancouver.' That's now over 43 years ago. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 16, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 16, 2022 When I visited the US I went on a fly drive and covered quite a distance in two weeks, nearly 3,000 miles. Landed in New York and picked up the hire car and then headed west to Gettysburg and spent a couple of days there then south through the Shenandoah Valley to Chattanooga where I spent a few more days then to Nashville and then I headed up the Ohio river valley back to New York and then spent the final three days with an English friend and his family in Connecticut. Really beautiful country especially the Shenandoah Valley.
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted January 16, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2022 (edited) Enjoyed following your photo journey on the thread Jamie. Many places we have also been but many that we still would like to visit. Our planned 30th consecutive year of visiting the USA did not happen in 2020 due to the pandemic. Cant wait to revisit once things settle down a bit. Hopefully you can continue this thread upon your next visit at some time in the future. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted January 20, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 20, 2022 (edited) Just to let people know. I've started a new thread under Overseas Prototype, which is the rest of my European photos plus a bit of Africa plus Australia and a couple of Pacific islands. It should have started in February but Covid in our family in the UK meant that we are still in France so I started it today. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted April 20, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 20, 2022 Good afternoon from a rather cloudy and damp Charente. I haven't actually been back across the pond but I have spent some weeks reloading my photos in this thread that got lost in the great crash. Probably about 2000. It's been fun to catch up with some of the memories again and I've even corrected a few typos. It's now almost 2 years since I started uploading photos during the first lockdown in late April 2020. The four threads that have resulted seem to have been well received and I'm now well on with my European and rest of the World thread. In fact I'm now in Australia in 2019 at the start of the trip the ended up seeing the Big Boy. If anyone has the time to upload the missing photos that they uploaded to the thread it would be appreciated. The only thing that I haven't done is to reload any of mine that appeared in quotes.
