I assume the black gunge at Albert Lea is from ruptured tank cars.

 

In the first one at Sibley it says UP are investigating the cause.

I can tell them: It's the appalling state of a lot of the trackwork in the US.:(

 

Spectacular derailments do seem fairly common. I wonder what the ratio per mile of track is?

Its a lot less than one would think.  One has to remember that the UP owns about as much track as there was in the national rail network in the UK.  And its just the #2 railroad in the US.

 

Given the marshy area of the Albert Lea derailment, I'd guess it was a subgrade problem and the reports are that the Sibley derailment was a bridge failure.
