Ribbon glazing strips cut from acetate sheets from old report covers and vision panels masked.

The masked strips were sprayed with satin black and, once dry, we’re glued in place on the coach with the painted side facing inwards - much like the back painted glazing of the real units.

Darius, how did you mask for the circular yellow? It looks  perfect circle sometimes I think livery "designers" have a perverse sense of humour.

Robert

Hi Robert,

I used four lengths of Tamiya tape with parts of the circle cut out using an inverted 14mm paint tin as a guide (pretty much the right diameter).

The tapes were then positioned on the cab front to form the circle and the surrounding area masked to shield from overspray.

Light coats of white primer and Vauxhall Mustard Yellow followed.

Cheers

The decals are by Railtec and are excellent as ever.

Definitely the best model of this unit that I have seen, other examples I think are repaints of similar prototypes which I think are wider, so they don't look quite right - but the effort that has gone into the production of this model has produced a much more accurate model.

Great job!!

  • 2 weeks later...

This is the closest to the real thing that I've seen, especially the cab ends - the turbostars class 170 etc.,  which most repaints use, have a squatter more curved profile - NIR took full advantage of the wider taller irish loading gauge! Well done.

Had a go at soldering some 0.3mm and 0.7mm dia. brass rod to make windscreen wipers.

Just need to add a dead bird wrapped around a wiper ! Brilliant work enlarged pics belie how small and fiddly they are . Brilliant work as ever

Thanks

Thanks Robert.  As there were no etched wiper blades of the right size available I decided to make my own using a soldering technique that I have seen Michael Edge use on his workbench thread.  It was not as difficult as I thought it would be.

Thanks Colm.  It’s down to the CAD and 3D printing skills of m0rris, who has captured the look of these units so well.

Now just need to a model of the one that was reported on fire the other day. 3car set looks really good but will you follow Translink and do a 4 car extended set ?

I think this will look better in the flesh but photos show your sharp neat modelling well - so much better than mine !

Thanks for showing the build.

If you do get tempted to lengthen your C4000 just drop me a message and I am sure we can get something sorted. Keep up the good work, that C3000 looks amazing.
