We were booked on the 1.30 pm train, so this gave us chance to photo the train before it departed on the 12.00pm.

We then sat on the station having a cup of tea while we waited for our train. The weather was superb and with the station deserted it really felt like you had stepped back in time to the days of a sleepy branch line.

So another great day out. The rare rolling stock was a real treat. Will certainly come back again as I would ride in the electric auto car. I have seen this at Warley the other year. Today I think it was under wraps in the carriage shed.

Well worth a visit, so recommended. I will upload Lez’s photos later.

Cheers, Ade.

As the whole train was considered first class due to it being made of of the pre grouping stock, you could sit where you wanted. We bagged the guards compartment.

Thanks Ade.

Great photos.

The Stately Trains vintage carriages are a superb offering, they deserve full credit.

I enjoy the Embsay bookshop on visits and hope to return soon. The NER Autocar is a superb experience too, it visited the GCR last year.

Hi Ade,

Thanks for posting the photos of your trip. Lots of happy memories of my visits to the YDR (as it was then) when I was a kid.

Do you know if the loco hauling your train was visiting the line? It doesn’t look like one of the familiar engines I remember being on the books at Embsay? I also noticed they’ve got a Pacer tucked away in the yard - that makes me feel old!

It is Keighley Gasworks No. 2 from Tanfield Railway.

Next weekend is the Railway Rally weekend. With Caledonian Railway 419 from Bo'ness Railway in use Friday-Monday. No. 2 and the Autocar also be in use Saturday and Sunday. Full details: https://www.embsayboltonabbeyrailway.org.uk/events/railwayrally

That cabmen's shelter is similar to one that was originally in the forecourt at Hitchin Station - a few years ago it was "discovered" in a dilapidated state and restored to a decent condition and is now in the town's Market Square.  Such things were fairly common when taxis were horse-drawn and being a cabbie meant sitting outside in all weathers.

The ride was not bad at all. Made a big difference from the usual BR MkI’s at most preserved lines.

Important point. Most enthusiast money in the last 60 years has inevitably gone towards preserving and restoring locos, steam and diesel.  The good old Mk1, increasingly available from that time, and relatively easy to maintain, got many preserved lines into the passenger business. And today, when visitor numbers are largely comprised of families, not enthusiasts, Mk1s still fulfil that role, adequately. But those lovely restored coaches knock the Mk1 experience into a cocked hat, even for families. As for enthusiasts, I would expect them to be far more sought-out as a vehicle of choice, to the extent of influencing which lines to visit. Being a Southern sort of cove, the Bluebell scores highly in this respect.
