RMweb Gold Royal42 Posted June 22, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 22, 2021 I have obtained some loco bodies as seen below and want to get chassis' for them. I don't know what type they are so don't know what type of chassis to get, or where from. Can anyone here please help? cheers, Mike
Darlington_Shed
No. 680064, I believe a 4MT, can be seen here: https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/80064-2/ The black body at the front looks like a large Prairie, as per here: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=large+prairie+locomotive&iax=images&ia=images Can't help with the green one, I'm afraid. RMweb Gold D9020 Nimbus Posted June 22, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 22, 2021 Back right is an "old" Farish standard 4MT 2-6-4T. Front is a Farish GWR large Prairie. Rear left is unrecognisable! Neither of the identifiable models has been made for some time; the 4MT has been superseded by a newer, better and quite different model.
2mm Andy
Back left looks like a Bulleid light pacific, presumably Farish. Andy 1
RMweb Premium Kris Posted June 22, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 22, 2021 The rear left one is a rebuilt Farish Merchant Navy. 2
RMweb Premium Kris Posted June 22, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 22, 2021 Getting chassis for these would be a case of purchasing them second hand. You would likely find that you would have to purchase the whole model rather than just the chassis.
RMweb Gold Royal42 Posted June 22, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 22, 2021 Thanks all. Kris, that is what I was expecting and afraid of hearing. It sounds as if I would be better searching for second hand complete versions. Anyone know the best place to find used locos? I have tried Peters Spares and Farish Spares. Ideally, I would like to replicate this scene which I believe is a Black 5 and a Jubilee: cheers, Mike
RMweb Gold Scottish Modeller Posted June 22, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 22, 2021 Hi there, Looking at the prices currently being fetched for either chassis or locos... For the price you pay it would be better for you to buy complete running models and forget about restoring these bodies. Phil H

The previous owner has probably nicked the chassis to put under kits from manufacturers such as Langley. Here's a GWR version of the Prairie. I think I remember you saying that you don't do eBay or Facebook (those would be the first places I would look). If this memory is correct then keep your eyes on retailers such as Rails of Sheffield or Ellis Clark trains (amongst others). They do have second hand items. The model railway club in London also do second hand sales. It may also be worth looking at local auctions to yourself.
PenrithBeacon
Top left seems to be a rebuilt Bulleid. Beyond rescue I would think

That has given me confidence to search around for a Jubilee now; I see that Hattons do have one in stock but it's got broken bits so I'll give that one a miss. Kris, I'm not averse to eBay, it's just that I haven't used it and feel I wouldn't know what I am getting. I'm gullible enough not to notice a "too good to be true" deal. I just wish the shows could come back, so that I could look at the second hand and know who I was getting it from. Thanks again all, Mike
RMweb Premium Kris Posted June 22, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 22, 2021 For a Jubilee the Peco versions were good in their time but have now been superseded by the Farish ones. They are a lot cheaper however.
RMweb Gold D9020 Nimbus Posted June 23, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 23, 2021 Unusually for them, Contikits have some N gauge British models listed on their website at the moment; normally these are only available at shows. Don't know whether they have what you're looking for though.
RMweb Gold Royal42 Posted June 23, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 23, 2021 Thanks Nimbus, I have just checked and there is a decent sounding , and affordable, Bachmann BR 2-6-4T #800064; but what is a 5 pole motor? Mike
Bittern
This image illustrates what the motor poles are in a 3-pole motor - a five pole motor is the same concept but has five coils. More poles gives a smoother torque, all else being equal, though you'd be hard-pushed too get a 7-pole motor into an n-scale body.
RMweb Gold D9020 Nimbus Posted June 24, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 24, 2021 Early Farish models had 3-pole motors that ran very hot with some controllers. The 5-pole motor version was much better, and continued to the end of Poole production.
RMweb Gold Royal42 Posted June 24, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 24, 2021 Thanks again, I sent an email requesting the Bachmann loco but have not yet heard back confirming my order. cheers, Mike
Ray Von
The body shells you have might be worth keeping should you (or someone you know) decide to create a loco scrap yard? You can disguise the lack of running gear by placing them in a row behind a more complete model, or strategic placement of "weeds" / other scrap about the lower portion...?
