Newby Lane fuelling point.

Great work Jerry. You can’t beat a well planned and constructed micro layout to prove that you don’t need acres of space to build or enjoy a model railway. In these days of small modern houses and flat living it could be the future of layouts for many people. Keep up the good work providing others with inspiration.

Hi Everyone.

Hi Marc, I agree the bridge is not quite right but I may add a  dummy headshunt, I wanted a  bridge that I could a few motorcycles ( for sentimental reasons ) on, the arch is a little to large but I maybe able to hide it some how.

Thanks Wren for your kind words and to The Bandit.

I now have a different industrial unit building so this will be built up and added to the layout.

More soon.

Hi Everyone.

I managed to do a bit more work on the layout this morning.

I painted up the new building, here is a quick photo:

I still need to add brick paper to it, not sure about position, may move it once all buildings have been built.

I also put the other industrial units on top of the bridge to see how it would look,  not sure yet about it,  what do you think.

Any comments/suggestions are welcome.

More soon.

Jerry.

Hi Jerry.  Thank for inviting comments.  Your layouts always turn out well and this will be no exception.

My suggestion would be to perhaps add some metal railings up top, along the parapet of the bridge, to maybe make it look more like an industrial estate and less like a through road.  I’m not sure the small industrial units would have loading doors that open up onto a busy road.  One of them could then be a motorbike workshop, giving you plenty of reasons to park any motorbike you fancy outside.

Peering at the photos closely,  it looks to me like you’ve found space for Streamline points, rather than the tighter Setrack points.  Is that correct?  If so, it helps make the layout look that bit more realistic - the locomotives can glide in and out.

Looking good so far, Keith.

Thanks Keith for your comments/suggestions.

I think I will take those industrial units off the bridge,  I was going to sleep on it but I wasn't convinced they looked right.

The points are streamline ones, small ones but look better than the set track ones.

Jerry.

I like the height and the elevated "street scene" the industrial buildings create; the only thing is they look a bit odd perched on top of a bridge. You could change it from a bridge to a tunnel, but that raises a bigger question - why would a railway build an expensive tunnel just for a small service yard? Just build the yard somewhere easier!

In front of the fiddle yard seems like a better choice, since it increases the scenic length of the layout. And once again, there's no need to keep things square to the baseboard edge...

Hi Jerry, I really like what you have achieved so far. I think the flexibility you have allowed yourself in positioning the buildings is the best way to go. For my two pence your could keep your new building along the rear adding your two original buildings. As has already been suggested you could put the industrial units in front of the fiddle yard. Making the bridge at a slight angle might open the layout up a little and create space for your dummy head shunt should you chose to do so.

Sorry for the late late response to your question, I don't have a website for my micro, but I did take some pics of the construction so I could put them up in future.

Hi Everyone.

Just a quick update.

Well, the industrial units have gone from the bridge.

Looks better I think.

I also started with the palisade fencing,  its a Wills kit and looks really good.

Hi Everyone.

There has been a few slight changes at Newby Lane.

I have added an other track under the bridge, also shortened the fuel tanks so they would fit, the track has been painted also.

Here is a few photos:

Fuel tanks shortened and turned 90 degrees, other track added.

I'm not sure about where to the buildings ( portacabin especially  ) so any ideas would be welcome.

Hi Jerry,
I'm glad you took those industrial buildings off the bridge - that didn't look quite right, as others have said.
As I mentioned before, I like to move buildings around before glueing them permanently into position. I tend to shuffle some trains about with background (and foreground) buildings in position. I would advocate taking some photos of 1 or 2 wagons and a loco on the layout - to see what background combination works best. This can help, as it's sometimes when looking at photos of our layouts, we decide that we could have done something differently.....

More importantly though, really sorry to hear bad news re your Dad. Hope everything is OK mate.

Hi Everyone.

Thanks Marc for your suggestions etc, food for thought.

I have managed to do a little work on the layout,  here is a photo or two:

Security fencing added along the back also paving.

Made a start on hardstanding at the front from plasticard,  this will be painted a light grey colour and weathered once complete.

My dad is not so good,  he has dementia and is in hospital fighting a lung infection and a few other problems.

More when I can.

I've been enjoying this build Jerry, and it's giving me inspiration for my own boxfile layout. Thank you!

I hope it is helping take your mind off your sad news, albeit for brief periods. All the best.

Hi Everyone.

Thanks for the support etc so far Everyone,  it's much appreciated.

I have managed to do a bit more to the layout today.

I have made a start on the concrete hardstanding and built up another fuel discharge point kit.

Here are a couple of photos:

Hi Everyone.

I managed to grab a hour this morning and did a bit of work on the layout.

I added some rough overgrowth and planted the trees, also made a start on hiding the fiddle yard with low relief industrial units,  pavements etc.

Here are a few photos:

I'm going to make a backscene next and stick everything down.

Jerry, this is coming along nicely.

I would also like to thank you for the idea of extending the scenery a short way into the fiddleyard, rather than bringing it to an abrupt halt at edge. I am now retrofitting suitable materials to Diversion/Umleiting!

Cheers

This little layout keeps getting better - the composition and latest scenic details all seem to work well together. The only comment - and it's really, really minor - is I'd suggest rotating the brick pump building slightly so it's parallel with the track behind it, rather than the baseboard edges, just to break up the "squareness" a little bit.

Other than that everything looks great - the warehouses in front of the fiddleyard works well, as does the extra siding under the bridge, and with the small foreground buildings you should be able to get some excellent eye-level shots across the yard to the trains beyond.

As usual, I'm looking forward to whatever's next!

Hi TechnicArrow.

Thanks for your suggestion,  unfortunately its glued into a recess in the concrete hard standing so I can't really alter it now.

I do that so the buildings look like they have been set into the ground rather than plonked on top of it.

Fair enough! I agree "planted" buildings look much better than "plonked" ones, although I often just hide the joint with weeds or other scatter material.

Hi Everyone.

A quick update today,  I have made a industrial building but I'm not quite happy with it so I may buy one, also added a post box and figures to the other end of the layout that hides the fiddle yard.

Here are some photos:

Added post box, figures. Jim is late for work and Mr Thomas isn't happy.

More soon.

Hi Everyone.

Another quick update.

This afternoon I made the rest of the industrial unit at the right.

I ran out of cladding plasticard so I laid individual strips of good quality thick paper and then painted it red, added a window and a plasticard roof.

Also made a start on a new fuelling point.

Here are a couple of photos:

How layout looks at the moment.

Still a fair bit to do,  more soon.
