What to do with my steam fleet? Musings whilst I finish Hither Green (temporary title)

Well this is my steam fleet. I’m not sure what sort of layout to build for them, or what room I have available. I’d like a roundy roundy layout so I can watch the trains

So firstly, my grouping to BR trio

I have some wagons these can play with

i also have this 3, with a set of 4 suburban coaches on order to go with them.

I’m open to suggestions

You seem to have a lot of Terriers from diverse eras. (I love my Terrier btw even though my layout is set in the northeast (sort of).)  I wonder if you should focus on one era.  I see a larger loco in the background with early crest.

BTW Waddon is not a million miles from me:

Cosmetic only alas.

Somehow, create an "era swap" layout, which is going to be a challenge given the date difference.

Train of thought:

- to have minimum change in scenic setting over that span, it must be somewhere isolated, a bit of a backwater;

- something inspired by one of the minor wharves on estuaries that the LBSCR specialised in;

- the East Tramway at Newhaven,or the outer end of The Crumbles branch, given that shingle is timeless;

- something inspired by the Hassocks sand pit line;

- go for an urban setting, New Cross - Deptford Wharf area, and make sure that the rear backdrop is all buildings that would barely have changed, or perhaps a viaduct;

- a "train passing in the landscape" picture-type layout, where everything visible, apart from the railway itself is natural ........ bridge crossing a small river maybe, one signal atop an embankment, that sort of thing, could work very well using hidden set-track curves to create a circuit;

- a shrine to Terriers;

- a puppy farm.

Well, I’m not selling them to buy a diesel as I can have both lol.

I love Terriers, they are my favourite steam loco hence I’ve got lots from all the eras and it was nice that Dapol have done a good job (not brilliant) which will allow me to do some modelling, as per my 2644 which is not how Dapol made it.

I was considering a windswept single line with maybe a wharf, similar to Dungeness, or isle of Grain or Sheppy. That sort of thing, but maybe rolling hills with lush greenery to a riverside wharf in the Kent or Sussex countryside type thing, but I have decided not to make Hither Green bigger

I have been working on a micro based on the Scalescenes Canal Wharf kit:

https://scalescenes.com/product/ly02-canal-wharf-boxfile-layout/

The prints are blown up by 175% for 0 gauge.  I have done the buildings, now I need to get to grips with the base.  I figure the Terrier is an ideal size for this.

However, as Paul says you will need a decent sized layout for your larger locos.

what I want is a continuous circuit. I have enough end to end shunting with Hither Green. I want to be able to watch stuff roll by

I'd like that too but I haven't got the space so end to end it has to be.  Despite a decent basement layout space of 11' x 20' it still isn't enough.

trying to sell my OO gauge stuff, to get more O. Done the OO thing and was never satisfied by it (mainly due to droopy couplings and derailments caused by them). Don’t have that issue in O

psssst….wanna buy a diesel? :diablo_mini:

So true.  I managed to flog all of my 00 stuff which funded a lot of my 0 gauge.

I was always irritated by couplings that didn't look right and narrow gauge stock.  All that is solved with 0.  So happy I changed and Dapol take the blame for that.

No, I don't wanna buy a diesel, just finishing putting a DCC sound decoder in my Class 20.  I have way more wagons than I need but I have been circumspect with my loco purchases.

I’d have less locos if I hadn’t built a loco depot…..and more willpower to say enough

Well, my latest Terrier arrived, but was bitterly disappointed because it’s meant to be sound fitted (according to the box and Hattons) so all I can do is pose it. But I have finally got something to pose with my SECR brake van

Well, it was a short acquaintance, farewell 751, safe trip back to blighty

I don't get it, it looks a lovely loco.  It is not a Herculean task to fit sound to these, I did with mine.

Terriers and short trains of suburbans are ideal for the traditional Minories layout.    They aren't very interesting to watch on a continuous run to be honest.   The LBSC flogged many of them as too small for increasing traffic so they are great for fictitious light railways,  as are Adams Radials sold for the same reason, so maybe a light railway using Terriers sourced from the LBSC where the owners were too mean to pay for a repaint.  Scots are mean enough.  Maybe nick my Isle of Skye railway, Portree to opposite Kyle concept with Terriers being thrashed up mountain passes or round the rocky coast with short trains. Highly scenic, with Haggis roaming the glens and the occasional Nessie Clone harvesting unwary sassenachs.   You didn't say sensible ideas did you?
