A couple of sheets of foam board from “The Range” “Hobbycraft” or similar craft shop and paint with acrylics - Sky Blue and Titanium White for sky and clouds. See attached pic for example (this image has been recently posted elsewhere on the site).

Most commercial backscenes have a sky which is far too blue - although recent efforts are much better.

It's not just about "realism", we have to consider whether an over bright backscene (sky, mountains, townscape,...) detracts from the 3D part of the layout by drawing attention away.

The answer to your question will also depend to a degree on how and what your backscene is being fixed to.

If you want one uninterrupted sky an option is using commercial printing banner. You can get this printed yourself, or paint the material using acrylic spray. Here’s my digitally printed version

If you’re happy to consider separate sheets with discrete joins you can use plasticard or foamboard display board and paint them yourself, it’s a relatively simple task.

The important element of all of the above is color balance with the modelled scene. A disadvantage of commercial products is they are often gloss finished, and saturated colours. By doing them yourself you can control that balance to diffuse the contrast between the 3D modelling and the 2D backscene. Here’s a foamboard example
