Hello All

Can anyone tell me which services conveyed sleeping cars say west of Exeter in the late 1960's Early 70's, was it just services from Paddington or were there sleeper services from the north as well?

Thanks

Ian

When did the Scottish service start? The earliest passenger timetable I have is for 1977 which shows the northbound service as 15.00 Penzance to Glasgow/Edinburgh.

Edit - having thought about this a bit more, were the sleeper cars attached/detached at Bristol Temple Meads, with 'day' coaches only west thereof?

cheers

I've just spent the past 15 minutes looking at the working timetable (Plymouth to Penzance) for 18th April 1966 - 5th March 1967.

Down direction

On weekdays the 05:01 departure from Plymouth, London newspapers and parcels train also conveyed sleeper cars. This train arrived in Penzance at 07:40. This was the 00:30 departure from Paddington.

On weekdays the 05:25 departure from Plymouth was a Paddington sleeper service departing at 22:30. This arrived in Penzance at 08:10

On weekdays the 05:40 departure from Plymouth was a Paddington sleeper service departing at 00:35. This arrived in Penzance at 08:25

On weekdays the 07:30 departure from Plymouth was a Paddington sleeper service departing at 23:50. This arrived in Penzance at 10:05. Sleeping cars on this service were detached at Plymouth.

Up direction

Both the 21:10 and 21:35 from Penzance were sleeper services to Paddington.

The Saturday and Sunday services were very similar.

The overnight trains from the Midlands and up North are not noted as conveying sleeper coaches.

The May 1971-April 1972 WR passenger TT shows the only Sleeper services from Devon and Cornwall as those to and from Paddington; The WR/Scotland Sleeper started and terminated at Bristol.

Correction; At that time the Bristol/North Sleeper ran to and from Newcastle, not Scotland.

Car Sleeper Newcastle - Newton Abbot & return

Similar pattern for 1967 -68 and 1968-69 with minor variations to times plus the nortjhbound Car Sleeper from Newton A. terminated at Edinburgh.

The above are weekday times but do not include Saturday or dated variations from the times quoted.

Just checked the 1967-1968 working timetable (Plymouth to Penzance). Details are pretty much the same as the 1966-1967 version.  The 22:45 from Paddington is however noted as potentially having car flats in addition to the sleeper coaches.

I seem to remember from the mists of time in the mid 70’s, that there was a Paignton - Stirling combined motorail/sleeper service which used to pass Weston-super-Mare about 4ish.  I couldn’t tell you that the return working was.

The car GUVs were introduced in the 1970-71 timetable (without checking climbing up into the attic to check it).
