Forward planning can take place away from the railway room (aka the garage) so potential challenges can be worked through and solutions reached.

However, planning is no good if one then c*cks up completely when the practical aspect is started.

For example wiring the 1st baseboard to the r/h end then realising the board was not only upside down but also turned around, so the apparent r/h end would actually be the middle of the two boards...

I just went with "agree", I know that it's a bit lame. My other half says that she's happy with me making art a career as long as I don't develop a white man afro.

She tends to shiver if I show her Bob's picture.

A friend of mine back in my teens had bright red hair like that. He used to go to great pains to dye it black and straighten it. He said it was because girls wouldn't look at him and even the nerds taunted him about it. He's been married a good twenty years now, I wonder if she knows? :D

One can definitely make mistakes like measuring something needing to be 54ins and inexplicably measuring the wood a as 45ins. Mind you not a frequent occurance.

I have long recognised that life is a process of reducing material to off cuts. I have off cuts of ply, wire ,pieces of rail, pieces of plastikard etc. One can spend more time going through offcuts than actuall cutting and assembling the pieces you cut from fresh because none of the off cuts were big enough. I do use some offcuts but each one I use produces one or two more offcuts.

Trying to reduce the size of the offcuts bin is a step on the road to insanity.

Quite a bit more progress on the Yard box.

Only cost me two drill bits and a large plaster...

All the switches are now in place.

The power end has two stereo av sockets for 16vac and 12vdc feeds.

The hole will have a 9-pin D connector for the handheld controller ( which only needs 4 wires but I've bought a pack of 10 male/female connectors with covers, so I'm standardising).

The baseboard end has one 9 pin in and one 9 pin to add.

There will be one 'cable' to the layout, consisting of two 8-wire cables. This will terminate in a single 15 pin connector.

Separate panel/cables/connectors will be used for the station.

Many thanks Stu, I just might go for that.

The metal is quite/very hard, so it needs sharp drill bits and some pressure - hence the two 3mm bits that snapped.

Nice job on the panel Stu.

I note you are still using the Noggin the Nog typeface.

Top stuff.

Just one thought Stu - I'd be inclined to use different types of connector for the dc and ac inputs.

Thanks.

The sockets and plugs are colour coded, so I should be safe...

Hmm...

I have previously used these on several exhibition layouts and never had an issue, so am reasonably confident I can tell red from white.

This was proven only yesterday after gouging my finger as I snapped the bit in the power drill...
