Trelothen - a Cornish fishing harbour

Hi Stu,

Peterhead station (ok, Scotland rather than Cornwall) had a fish loading siding with just a basic shelter - being away from the harbour, lorries drove alongside the loading track and unloaded into the waiting vans, with the roof providing shelter from the worst of the elements. Space was quite tight and the design need not take as much space as a goods shed, being shortened to suit the location. Seen on the right in the Stuart Johnson Flickr image here:

Just a thought.

Martyn.

A bit more work and tested for suitability size-wise.

I think the platform is too low, compared to the van doors.

It's also too close to the baseboard edge, so the track will need to be tweaked.

Looks good there Stu.

Can you just add, an inch of timber, about the length of the Shed to place a Vehicle on un loading?

Hi Andy,

Thanks, but no, that would take the board outside the fixed width (600mm) that I need to keep to if I'm to get the layout in the car.  Even if it was a temporary, exhibition-only extension, it would also fall outside the planned layout lighting area.

I should be able to move the track across enough to get some space, maybe even to widen the shed too.

That does look better, I think.  Will it be wood built?

Erm, it will be a 'wood' finish, but I've not decided yet whether wood, card or plastic sheet will be used to make it.

Wood finish is what I meant really, not very clear - sorry!

I thought that's what you meant.

I am also currently making a building for someone else, which uses 3mm laser cut plywood for the shell, and I have considered this method again for this shed.

I'm liking the goods shed, as has already been said, it's very Lambourn.

It also puts me in mind of Garstang Town on the GKER.

The 'platform' is definitely way too low Stu don't forget that traffic has to be moved out of and into the wagons.  .  It needs to be at least near enough to wagon floor level to give a gentle slope when the drop door of an open wagon is opened downwards onto the deck. Ideally it would be level with the wagon floor although that is unlikely in an older building.  (Incidentally it's a deck, not a platform in a goods shed.).

Have a look through this thread where several photos illustrate what I mean about the height in relation to wagon floor level.

Thanks for the confirmation Mike.

The deck will be wooden, supported on a wooden framework, rather than brick or stone.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions for this shed ( or even a crane), very much appreciated.

There may well be a crane next to the general siding.
