New to O gauge - Any advice?

Have a look on youtube,there are several videos of rough American trackwork(and even rougher Chinese stuff!)

I just had a look at Hattons and I believe I used the SL-10 joiners (these are specifically recommended for code 124 BH).  You also might want to get SL-11, insulated joiners.

 

I googled SL-710, these are for code 143 flat bottom rail.  I don't do flat bottom and I suspect they will be too wide for BH.
