SRL Fleet Services -

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've built quite a few large layouts over the years but never finished one, and with my latest layout "Eastbury Sidings" being torn down recently I've been struggling with my modelling mojo.

So I've knocked up a small manageable baseboard to see if I can kick start the enthusiasm again. (size is 5'10 x 15")

Its not going to be anything you've not seen before, it's just the classic depot type layout.

"SRL Fleet Services" is a private company that specialises in the maintenance of a variety of rolling stock and also offers stabling and refuelling to the various TOC's out there.

Basically it gives me a pass to run whatever I like on the layout. (within reason)

Track plan isn't finalised yet, but to be honest it's going to be quite limited with the space available!

I've attached a photo to give you an idea of what I'm working with. There will be a small fiddle yard too.20210724_160617.jpg.94615ca5e382a2f38c8480611902b183.jpg

As I said, not original in any way, but if it keeps me interested in the hobby then I don't really care. It will give me an excuse to add lots of details and show off my stock (as it grows)

All power to the micro layout! Just got to say that the slightly raised rear you are planning is almost exactly what I was envisioning for my own micro layout - you've saved me from having to mock it up!

My only question is - that raised section looks wide enough to run a line along ... could that be a (totally unconnected) track upon which to either run through trains or pose stock upon (say at a red signal?) My own micro isn't long enough to do that, but your use of (I think) SMS steel retaining wall almost suggests the kind of slight height difference often found in reality between running lines and sidings. Maybe even double the width so that the rear track (as placed) is part of a double track passing main line? To really have some fun, you could even provide those main lines with overhead power lines!

Sorry ... got carried away there! Think it is the additional length compared to my own layout that got me over excited! Whatever you do, I will be interested to see this develop.

PS

Is the lower building at the far end with the two rail access doors a kit, or scratch built?

Hi Scott,

I think we met a few years ago when you took on Braybridge? Hope you are well.

Early plans look good - I always think smaller layouts are a good cure for low mojo - easier to move forward with without getting stuck.

I'll follow with interest.

all the best,

James

Hi Steve,

Apologies I've not been on here for a bit.

As it stands, the back raised section has gone now, I'm not sure what I'm going to put there yet. I'm torn between a retaining wall or warehouses at ground level.

The depot building comes from  "Railway Laser Lines"   It came as plain wood and I've added my own cladding and brickwork. But again I'm not sure I'm going to use it now.

Thanks for looking and good luck with your build.

Cheers

Scott

Hi James,

We did indeed, and Braybridge is still going strong and is with a mate of mine now.

The plans keep changing on this depot layout, you'd think there was only so many ways you could lay track in such a small place. But never mind, it's doing the trick and keeping me interested.

Hopefully I'll have an update sometime soon.

Cheers
Scott

Chop and change doesn’t matter as long as it keeps your interest , that’s the main thing.

My mojo has almost been wiped out since moving from airlines to network rail , due covid destruction of my career....my hobby was trains, maybe it should be planes now ??

Hi Rob,

I'm sure you could knock up a mini Heathrow on a length of ply.. All joking aside, my mojo went whilst I was training for a new job role. I'ts now returning slowly but surely. Hang in there mate....

Afternoon,

A small bit of progress, I've started to put the track and hardstanding down. Just using thick sheets of mount board for the base and then I'll add either paint or printed sheets to represent the surface.

I'm happy with the way it's coming together, but still plenty to do.

Evening,

Well things are still moving along,  if a little slowly. Track is almost all fixed down, once done, it will be sprayed a mucky brown colour. I can then do the hard standing and any ballast.

I've also been having a go at a scalescenes low relief build which can be seen in the picture below.

I think it will do for this small layout. When I start my larger one I'll probably switch to Wills brick work.

Not a lot else to report really, just looking forward to wiring it up and making it come alive.

Morning,

I'm Still here, I just haven't done much with the layout.

What I should really be doing is tidying up the garage to make it a more enticing place to visit and then my modelling mojo may well return.

Its a mess and can't find what I need half the time. I'm on leave this week and one of my children has covid, so we're kind of confined to barracks,so hopefully I'll find time to sort it this week.

Anyway, I've started to paint the hardstanding and make it look less like cream cardboard,  not going that well but then this is where I struggle. I have some good ideas but getting the look I want is beyond my own ability a lot of the time.

I've added a picture, apologies for 37 421 appearing again, but I really am limited on stock at the moment, and I feel like I'm being priced out of the hobby at the moment (which probably doesn't help the mojo either

I'm not happy with the weathering on the building either  so that will probably be repainted or re-adjusted.

Thansk for looking

Scott

Sorry you've lost your mojo. If it's any consolation mine ebbs and flows all the time; my work is glacial at times.

Regarding the weathering. I find weathering a bit of a dark art. Sometimes I do something that i really like, but then I try and emulate it and it looks like a dog's dinner. The building looks fine to me, but maybe the ground work could do with some variation/toning down a little.

Thanks, the hard standing Its a work in progress,. so hopefully when it is toned down more it will compliment the building.

Earlier this week the sales team were getting the accurascale wagons ready for sale. The 10 wagons have now been added to a well known auction site.

At the weekend the 4-CEP society come in to work on their long standing project. Seen here waiting for the doors to open.
