RMweb Premium RobAllen Posted July 30, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 30, 2021 Does anyone know which locos were used as bankers from Bath in the 1920/30s. My library on S&D books isn't very large and my google-fu is failing me. Thanks.
RMweb Gold queensquare Posted July 30, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 30, 2021 In the 1920s it would have been the Fox Walker tanks. As these were withdrawn in the early 30s they would have been replaced by Bagnalls (Jinties). That said, photographic evidence suggests whatever was in the yard at the time could have been used including Scotties, 3Fs and 4Fs. There is a lovely description in Peter Smiths Footplate over the Mendips of Donald Beale having his first footplate experience on a Fox walker banking a freight out of Bath. RailWest
By coincidence, a message appeared elsewhere on the web today reporting that a 'Jubilee' (which was banned from the line) was used as a banker on one occasion as in the dark the driver mistook it for a 'Black 5' :-)
