Funtly Road Diesel depot 65-73

Recommended Posts

Hello all, having been a lurker for many years and never seeming to have enough time (or money) I have embarked on my first real effort of building a model railway (excluding what I helped with my father back in 60`S,70`S) a Diesel depot with  a time frame around 65 to 73, 2 reasons I love hymeks and class 22, along  with many  western / southern region diesels, and the option to run green and blues pre tops. Not fussed about real life locations and building styles just run what I like and the right era. My inspiration to do something stems from reading and watching  a layout on here from a long time ago, minimum space great atmosphere, and that was "Hendre lane" by I think Marc Smith, such a shame that it was lost when the forum changed and no longer is accessible

I have a space limitation of 5.5 feet by 16 inches wide. The main board measures 4ft by 16inchs which I purchased from grange and hodder as a starting point being lightweight and easy to handle.

Some planning has gone into it (rare for me)

Dcc sound

Electro-frog points with switching live frog

Manual turnouts nice to have some tactile moments not all electronics

2 road depot

2 road fuelling

warehouse/ freight for operational interest

Factory /industrial setting

So far I have built this

Bottom left is the 2 road depot

Fuelling point in foreground

low relief buildings  and retaining wall on right

point control is using blue point system from usa, have yet to connect operating rods to facia

Entry point under skewed bridge top left, Lh into fuel/stabling with the RH line running into factory /works, this is where i have my first queery do i make it a run around onto traverser or show it as reworked line and make one of the lines of the facing point into a short siding .

I also built a traverser using a 16 inch square module

My intention was to run all tracks through to traverser and so have the ability to run out from the depot as well, but i dont think this is really viable as dont have the stock to make most of it.

Any way thanks for taking the time to read my ramberlings and any observations, recomendations or critique very welcome as its a learning curve ,

Looks great and nice era :-)

Just a suggestion, on the position of the two road shed, to push this back a bit, to allow your locos to be stabled in front of the shed without fouling the points? Clearance may also be tight between the 3-way and the corner of the shed, so if it was pushed back it could be modelled half-relief?

Good luck with the build.

all the best,

Keith
