Popular Post pushpull33
It's coming up to a celebration, yes, a rather large one at that. In 2023 it will be 100 years that the Southern Railway was formed. Heritage railways, start buying Dark Olive Green paint. A project, yes, this project, I just can't remove it from my brain. I have been thinking about this project for a while but due to time restraints and work I hadn't got around to doing anything about it, until now that is. Oh god what's he thinking! I was somewhat hesitant as to what people might think, do to me or even kill me saying "that's sacrilege, that's vandalism, you can't do that" Let's imagine for the moment that the powers that be at Eastliegh works said to there apprentices "here's a loco, do what you want in celebration of the Southern Railway formed 100 years ago in 1923" well, someone might say it. It got me thinking as to what they might do. What would you do if let loose on a loco? For some years there has been a green Class 73 sitting in my cupboard doing nothing, it's actually a Lima body on a Hornby chassis. I was thinking this could be a candidate for this project. Yes, worringly, a lot of thinking has been going on lately. Ok, so it's a bit of fun, nothing serious and hopefully not intending on upsetting anyone. I model 1930s southern and the BR corporate era around the late 1970s. Anyone remember Pine Road, Exton Quay or Parkstone Goods then, that's me. So, let's get back to the project in mind, yes. That project that won't go away. Now, it has to be something reasonably easy to do, paint and that won't take to long, hey guys, there's a Class 73 in the cupboard. What do we have? Class 73, in stock, Paint, in stock, Lining, in stock, Not trying to blow my own trumpet but I have to say that a Class 73 in Dark Olive Green with Black boarder and White lining complete with half yellow ends, white window surrounds, brass horns and Black grills looks pretty dam good. Remember, this is a 'what might be' 'what could be' a 'what if' before you all go ripping your claws in to me, I would welcome your genuine opinion. Is this just sacrilege or does it actually look half decent to you? Eastliegh Works should really keep their apprentices under control. As an extra, I will keep this 73 as I have on order, a set of plates in memory of my Father on one side and my Mother on the other, they just havnt arrived yet. I will post further photos when they do. Perhaps also, i should worn you now. Should you arrive at an exhibition one day and I am presant, don't be surprised if this makes an apperance. 14 1 6
Yankee
Lovely modelling Colin as usual and a great idea about celebrating the 100 years, may be it could be put to the powers that be that something like this should be done on the real thing. Do you think the second year apprentices could have a crack at the “Eastleigh” D6508 Class 33, how about it Colin.
pushpull33
Well, that would be something to behold wouldn't it. You are right tho, I think something should be done. 1

Sophia NSE
Needs to be one in each of Ashford, Brighton, and Eastleigh olive green in the interest of fairness! It really suits the 73 and I'm not tempted to find a cheap Lima 73, honest! 2
jcm@gwr
Nice job. It will be interesting to see if any of the other TOC's pick-up on the date, after all, the LMS and the LNER were also formed/created at the same time.

stewartingram
Stunning. I'm an East Anglian fan myself, not Southern, but that looks superb. Non of the modern image trash of clashing colours and go-faster stripes, just proper livery application. Well done. Is this just sacrilege or does it actually look half decent to you? It makes a nice change to see a "Freelance but Plausible" livery on a British model diesel. It's a sort of "what if Nationalisation didn't happen?" model. I like it. Why UK modellers get so hot under the collar about fictional or at least inaccurate schemes I don't know, especially when they often invent a fictional or 'might have been' location for a layout anyway. In these days of Privatised TOCs I'd have thought a freelance one, maybe freight-oriented, with it's own livery would be an interesting project. But no - models of locos and stock must stick rigidly to the prototype, it seems. It's common enough in American outline modelling as there are real Railroads, known as Short Lines, that are full size 'freelance' operations, often with their own livery, so in modelling, made up companies and colors are perfectly acceptable. 2

I'm glad to here your take on this project and it's approval. Perhaps there may be more in the future, who knows. As you say. The Americans ha've done this sort of thing for years, but heaven help us if we mess with liveries in the UK.
RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted August 23, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 23, 2021 The Maunsell livery sits very well on this loco; it is one of my favourite liveries, imparting a quiet dignity to any loco or stock it is applied to. It would have looked magnificent on the streamlined Coronations, and even made the hideous A4s look reasonable (puts on tin hat and takes cover...).
eastwestdivide
As the rebuilt 73s are now powering the Caledonian Sleeper to Inverness, I think you need to get some Mk5 sleeper coaches repainted green pronto.
