RMweb Premium Kris Posted August 30, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 30, 2021 Just as a bit of inspiration for those who want a little bit of track that is not to main line standards. This track is still used, I watched 30+ passenger carrying trains go over it today. It is narrow gauge and perfectly functional and rather aesthetically pleasing to my eyes.
Halvarras
The short branch from St Blazey Yard to Par harbour photographed at around 4.45pm today. Still semi-regularly used by 126-ton Class 66s! A mint-condition 'EWS' 66125 propelled three JIA wagons along here six days ago on a very rare late afternoon visit - wish I'd known! - workings are usually early morning on Wednesdays, on an as-required basis I believe. I must go and witness this one day but I would need to (a) have prior knowledge, and (b) get out of bed in time!

Trog
I worked on reballasting some track at Kew once where due to a sewer that overflowed every time the tide came in on the Thames, you could hardly see the rails for tomato plants. The dozer leveling the bottom of the dig was pushing a foot high bow wave of raw sewage along the track bed. Just as well it was back in near BR days as I suspect that todays staff would not be quite so accepting of such working conditions. One of the relay gangers at the site meeting was digging tomato plants out of the track with his bare hands, to take home for his garden.
