Devonport Dockyard Naval Railway

Yes it is a civilian yard,  but I don't know if the intention is to take that over or construct a separate submarine base elsewhere in the area.  At the moment it remains hypothetical, until there's another the referendum and they vote to leave. In the meantime I suspect that rumour mongering will continue.

Falmouth ? But that’s a civilian dockyard isn’t it ? Wouldn’t that require massive investment in things such as security and the like

Falmouth would not be that hard to secure assuming that the existing yard was used, or at least part of it. The yard only has a single entrance area with cliffs to the rear of the rest.

At least one paper (the FT) was speculating this morning that the subs would be stationed in the US initially should Scotland leave.

If Portsmouth get the Nukes if Scotland gains Indi, (as mentioned today), then maybe that will be the close of such services at Demport? Another nail in the Yard's box?

It is much, more complicated than this.  To operate on nuclear submarines, you need a nuclear operating licence, which Portsmouth doesn't have and there isn't space in the Dockyard to adapt for submarine refits.  However, Barrow-in-Furness has a licence as it's where the subs are built......

The move away from Scotland for the Defence Fleet  is what the Government have intimated and announced this morning pal. They, of course, should always be trusted with the truth and so you can be certain this is going to happen...........or maybe just forget it, as I do.

Hi Phil, where was this info published? It's obviously of interest to us both as locals and as some of No.2 Son's mates are heading for subs rather than ships.

It's all speculation. Linked to the SNP's push for independence. SNP policy is to be a nuclear-free zone so either the remaining UK negotiates sovereignty of Faslane or it has to find a new home for the nuclear fleet. Some strange options have been mooted, including France and USA.

Made worse, by no longer being in the EU.

But bound by the international alliance of NATO, of which France is one of only three nuclear weapons states; the others being the US and ourselves.

What is France's current status within NATO? I recollect De Gaulle sent the Americans packing at one point.

He did (1966)

However Nicolas Sarkozy re-intergraded France into the NATOs military hierarchy in 2009

UK needs 4 Trident subs with US warheads & 2 massive aircraft carriers with US planes like why?

So we pay US corporations $bns to ‘own’ them.

Didnt help much in Afghanistan. No US special relationship anymore. UK needs to get used to being a marginal 3rd country mainly owned by foreigners our ruling class sold off to. Look at US, European, Chinese, Saud,i Russian ownership of former UK companies. Rolls-Royce now in the frame for US takeover.

If you need a nuke base then stick it in Pompey home of the RN.

UK government has a golden share in RR, so no foreign takeover possible unless the government relinquishes that share.

However it still maintains some control by various caveats. I have worked for one in this position.

What if that had happened 50 years ago?  A Soviet attack on Portsmouth might have caused hundreds of millions of pounds of improvements.
