Having moved to Maghull a few years ago, not far from the newly built Maghull North station, I’ve been fascinated by looking at old photos from the location.  It’s hard to believe 40’s 47’s snd 50’s ext were a regular occurrence on the line with services to and from Liverpool Exchange towards Preston, nowadays it’s 507/8’s and the occasional 37 on the Network rail test trains at night.  Last night I discovered some cracking photos between the bridges of School Lane and Park Lane which is now the site of the new station, this then got me thinking about a small model to actually run something.

As some of you will know my passion is 7mm and I’m currently building a depot layout based on Edge Hill diesel servicing point in the 60’s (please take a look at my thread North Mersey Diesel 8N) but this is a long project and there’s not much room in 7mm.  This it how the brain started wandering last night to a possible side project which would have a scenic section roughly 8’x15” this is to scale and the possibility to run something if it was in 2mm using N gauge Finescale track, I’d have to add a 3rd rail also and either side of the line would be fields.  The two bridges are ideally situated for scenic breaks also.

anyway this is still very much on the drawing board and maybe a long way off happening but I do enjoy researching and planing, here’s a few maps of the area in question in the 1960’s and a link to the photo that inspired me on Flickr

Hi Paul,

This video may be a little before your time period but shews the line through Maghull quite well:

Gibbo.

Thanks for that, cracking video some nice shots of Edge Hill to, not far off my time period though of the mid 60’s

Not much really to add at the moment but I have been drawing out the plan for the layout to scale to see how it looks, I also noticed the other day that one of the original street lamps that lit the footpath is still here although not in use.  I still need to build boards but I’m tempted to order the track sooner rather than later from British Finescale who do flexi in code 40, I’m also very tempted to buy the Farish split box 40 which looks very nice.

Over the last couple of days I’ve been trying to work out the widths of School Lane and Park lane bridges using various measuring apps and google maps.  Most were giving the same measurements so I thought I’d try a measure the real thing today whilst walking the dog and I’ve been more or less spot on with what I’d worked out.  The bridges have been printed off to scale more or less now and a few parcels have arrived in the post, more to come later…

Slowly getting used to threading rail into the chairs, it’s a far cry from track making in 7mm!  Must admit I’m quite excited about this, I’ll hopefully getting the ply fit the two boards this week

I’ve made a start!!  I got the wood for the two boards earlier today, I still need to make the frame work, but over the last few days I’ve been making up all the track work which wasn’t that difficult once you get used to it.  Not much of a photo but it kind of gives an idea of how it might look

Gibbo.

Great pic :good: although the only recollection I have of them was when they were stored at Langton dock sidings (I think) all smashed up

Not until now :good: they look rather good and something to think about in the future, at the moment I’m about to down size from 7mm back to 4mm for my main layout project based on Edge Hill but I can’t wait to run stuff on this project
