Hibelroad
Well the postie must be reading this as the Modeller has just been delivered. I showed the front cover to Mrs HR and her reaction was "its just an advert isn't it?" So there we have the reaction of the man in the street , so to say. I was talking about the V2 rather than the D Class. However, my thoughts are the same. It is the difference between a model you can buy and it looks just like the one on the cover, or a model that an individual has done something to, which it makes it more personal and individual. The D Class is a real beauty but it doesn't inspire me to have a go at producing something similar, whereas a kit built example by a fellow modeller might. I could afford a Lee Marsh loco if I really wanted one. I would much rather have a loco that I have built myself. I don't expect everybody else to feel the same way. They are rather lovely after all! My first thought was to wonder whether Bachmann had paid for the extra advertising (on the front cover too) or if Railway Modeller had just gifted it to them. There are times when I turn a page in a magazine and have to work out whether I am looking at an article or an advert.
micklner
Worth a read the actual review of the V2 in the magazine , I will leave it as "interesting" compared to what has been said by others , on the V2 thread herein. The only thing of note on the front cover, is the Zebra Crossing on front of the Cab, the lining is that wide !!.

However I did have a quick look at the digital copy and my reaction was that it looked like a Bachman’s advert. There may be past examples of this but I would much prefer a layout picture relevant to the main contents. https://pocketmags.com/railway-modeller-magazine?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIs9Hug9XM8wIVi5ntCh2dwwe7EAQYAiABEgKH6PD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

At one point in (I think) the early 80s, we used to refer to AP as the "Amateur Pornographer", some of the features, especially those of the work of David Hamilton, would now get you put on the sex offenders register. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hamilton_(photographer) As for past Railway Modeller covers, before the layouts completely took over on the cover, there were layouts, young ladies admiring layouts and, at Christmas a happy bloke with a pipe and a hat from a cracker... Steamport Southport
I beg to differ with the comments that RM is aimed at the lower spectrum of modellers. What magazine has just had a three part article on building a 7mm Connoisseur Models kit of a LMS 4F? Also had recent articles from Tony Wright on building DJH loco kits. Has had articles on building wagon kits. Also the only magazine that has regular articles with drawings, this month it's Highley Signal Box. Previous magazine has GWR 15XX drawings. Slate wagon construction and scratchbuilding huts. Maybe people should try looking at a recent issue rather than using outdated views from years ago. RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted October 17, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 17, 2021 (edited) I just tried visiting the pocket mags website to view this allegedly controversial front cover and all the webpages have a grey sheen over them and you can't click on anything. Is it just me? EDIT - Scrub that, it's my Adblocker!!! Edited October 17, 2021 by John M Upton

I suppose that they don't need to have their attention grabbed in the newsagents, by the exciting goodies on offer that month. The cleaner lines are welcome, but you can see how the art editor has chosen an image with bland areas that will appear behind the contents' text.
RJS1977
Trouble is that I find the content information labels useful when searching through back issues for an article. Even if that particular article isn't listed on the cover, I can often think "It was opposite article _______________".
