Jim Martin
I was looking at this photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/151904976@N08/49400924767 earlier. According to the caption, the TEA is on a Grangemouth to Sinfin aviation fuel flow (presumably returning empty, since this is a northbound train). Sinfin is the site of a big Rolls-Royce plant: am I right in thinking that the fuel was used for testing engines? Also, when did this flow start and finish? eastwestdivide
Ran last Monday (1347 Sinfin to Grangemouth): https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:R03222/2021-10-11/detailed I don’t know when it started. 1

It's been running for at least thirty years, I would think. Someone on here used to work it occasionally.
Jim Martin
Thanks very much. I assume that it is for engine testing: there isn't any airfield for miles from Sinfin. This struck me as an opportunity to run a single wagon of a type usually seen in block formations. Jim
eastwestdivide
Yes, I’m sure its for RR internal use.
Mol_PMB
When I used to work overlooking Derby station (about 15 years ago) it was typically a rake of 5 or 6 TEA tanks, green and yellow ones. So perhaps not a prototype for a single wagon, but certainly a good deal shorter than a normal tank train. 1
RPNaylor0301
It is indeed for the test beds at Sinfin, RR have a fuel farm supplied by rail. Sidings can accommodate 8 or 9 bogie tanks + loco I believe (from memory) but the train length is determined by need that week. Dad's not 'big' on trains but spent a lot of time around there from the RR side, so I reckon he could help with questions.
