Earl of Merioneth arrived from Derails today. Trundled away on the rolling road happily

My Livingston Thompson also arrived from Derails today. Had a quick test run up and down a length of spare track. Simply stunning, no other words for it. The level of detail is unbelievable, I had to put my glasses on to fully appreciate it. Definitely raised the bar for oo9 RTR. Bring on the Quarry Hunslets.

The boilers from the original Earl (aka Taliesin/Livingston Thompson) and Merddin Emrys were both on their last legs by the late 1960s so two new boilers were built by Hunslet to a simpler parallel/raised firebox design rather than the traditional 'wagon top' boilers and 2 feet longer than the existing boilers.

Merddin received one of the new boilers in 1970 but the changes in appearance led to a campaign to preserve EofM/Tal/LT as a static relic and build a completely new superstructure for the second new boiler  - that's how we got the 'Square', the 1979 new construction Earl of Merioneth and the 1885 loco was eventually cosmetically restored as Livingston Thompson, now at the NRM York

Merddin has since been modified to a traditional outline with the longer Hunslet boiler and as such is a roughly 13" to 1 Foot scale replica of how it was in Victorian days.

The Hunslet boilers have proved troublesome with serious cracking around the boiler/firebox joints, both MR & EofM have spent long periods out of service while specialist repairs were done, EofM now being withdrawn and stored out of use.

David Lloyd George & the new James Spooner have taper boilers overcoming some of the structural weaknesses of the Hunslet boilers but retain the larger size of the Hunslet boilered locos, hence the dimensional liberties Bachmann needed to take to produce their DLG version

Thanks very much for that Martin. Very useful info.

My dad was a huge Festiniog fan and lived lineside in Tanygrisiau for the last 33 years of his life. He had a few issues involving depression and the like, so the FR really helped him in that respect. What else but a lovely Stanier hooter whistling past you every day would raise your spirits !!

I am struggling to come to terms with the birth, rise and fall of EoM as I remember seeing it for the first time in around 1979.  I returned home and told my dad but he wouldn't believe me, and had to wait to see photos in the magazines.  I think the kind thing would be to cosmetically restore it as a comparison to "Livingston Thompson".  Can the FR Trust acquire a purpose build artic trailer which could serve as a portable display ? Remember the olde artic low loaders with the detachable goose neck ?

Been contacted about my choice of 009 wagon for the collectors club today, so suspect that both the carriage and my ‘David Lloyd George’ will be dispatched presently

I was contacted last week after my order/renewal but not heard anything since.

I wonder if anyone who's ordered DLG and renewed their club membership had a dispatch confirmation/tracking info?

Mine arrived from Derails at the weekend. What an absolute beauty, well done Bachmann!

Lovely pictures. Thanks for posting!

Can I ask how well the loco sits alongside the Peco L&B coaches? I’m aware that FR stock is built to a smaller loading gauge than some other lines, the L&B included.

My finger ‘slipped’ whilst browsing the internet over the weekend :D and now I have a sound fitted EoM on the way - I’m just wondering what people would recommend to run with the new models?

The locos look okay next to the L&B stock

The above is actually a prototypical train - I have been pulled by Merddin Emrys whilst sitting in former L&B coach 14 (aka the Snapper Bar), so there is precedent for the combination of a double Fairlie and an L&B coach (albeit that the peco model is rather inaccurate for the Snapper Bar) . If you’re happy with impressions then they work fine, but if you are eager for prototypical accuracy then the Peco ‘bug boxes’ and ‘bowsiders’ that are on their way out presently are a much better fit.

in terms of the EoM you have on the way, the Peco green bug boxes are an immediately available option for something prototypical. That model represents the loco in early preservation days, so basically any green FR carriage will look right-ish behind it :)

Those are Peco coaches in the post you quoted :)

I think it looks great with them and closer size wise than the bug boxes even though they are prototypical! ;)

If you log into the Collectors Club website, goto "My Account" you will see your order listed, open the invoice PDF and it shows the courier/Royal Mail option.  My order for DLG shows Royal Mail 2nd class, unfortunately no tracking information. My order was placed on the 23rd November, fingers crossed it arrives soon!

My DLG arrived very fast as I ordered on the announcement day but the renewal is still in the queue as they were setting up a new printer for the cards or something they said in an email.

Acccording to information on festpedia https://www.festipedia.org.uk/wiki/FR_Carriages the First Class Bug Box Peco offer is not authentic for the 1960s/1970s green and white and forthcoming cherry red liveries as the only first class one that survives was the "zoo car" for 100 years being converted  by 1887 and its restoration completed to a closed first class coach in 1992.. A separate "zoo car" was built at Boston Lodge in the 1990s.  You can authentically run a zoo car and three third classes, subject to actual detail variations, with EoM. The ability of them to go round very sharp curves does mean my planned Tan y bwlch ish layout is practical.

Bug boxes have a complex history, and there were numerous variants even of the normal third class ones. Matchboard or or panelled sides, deadlights or all glazed etc.

When you get onto the former first class or open ones, which went through a period of being ‘zoo’ or ‘porthole’ but also had a period with very large glazed windows, its also complex. And the existing ones are a mix of restorations and replicas but not always the same type they were previously.

Did I read somewhere that the Peco ones are too long?

Incidentally the EoM model has white-wall tyres which I think places it in the late 1960s and perhaps more at home with cherry red carriages than the green/cream ones. Don’t forget the brief varnished wood period in between!

Although the invoice for my collectors model says RM 2nd class I received the model by Fedex. I received it a couple of days after the order changed from ‘in progesss’ to ‘complete’ in my account. It’s an exquisite models, mine runs beautifully, it’ll be worth the wait i’m sure

After my sound-fitted Livingston Thompson had an unexpected tour of the South coast thanks to Royal Mail, mine has just arrived. One word - stunning. The photos do not do it justice.

Well done Bachmann - happy to see more 009 offerings. Will have a play with it tonight.

This is pretty engine. Despite being longer than Heljan's L&B tanks, it has much less bulk look to it. And yes this will run on PECOs tightest OO-9 set track curves. And look naturel on it.

The loco is surprisingly light, but perhaps not given the chip and speaker fittings.

I've gone for a plain DC as my plans are for around 1/2 a dozen 00-9 engines and of these, some do not offer DCC possibilities while others are too small for sound (the remaining 3 locos will be smaller).

A couple of pics, one showing how small it is to P class tank. While pretty, the Fairlie must uncomfortable to operate!

And the connection is...

... the brass domes on the (square) Earl of Meirioneth came from scrapped P class tanks!

Double engines are very comfortable to operate as long as there are only two of you! Superb ride and everything in easy reach.

Right, Merddin arrived - now does anyone know how it comes apart? There's a lot of screws under there!

First question; why do you need to? I just did it out of curiosity.

Have a look at that instruction leaflet; the clues will be in there.
