The Quirky Poll 2021

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the third annual Quirky Poll that we run in conjunction with our friends Andy York & Phil Parker of RMweb. Many of you found these Polls to be just what we intended… ‘a little bit of Christmas fun’!

You will find below a list of 25 items – some of which are your suggestions from 2020 – each with a link to a photo and/or further detail. We haven’t listed certain suggestions as models are actually available – albeit from overseas makers.

You may tick as many items as you like, but – although this is ‘Christmas fun’ – they must be items that you would realistically wish to buy if they were ever made (as you used to do with The 00 Wishlist Poll) – it is not to decide ‘the quirkiest’.

The Top Item of the 2019 Quirky Poll – Stephenson’s Rocket – has been announced as have the Top Two of the 2020 Poll – Bellerophon and Titfield Thunderbolt. In respect of the latter, we asked you to vote for ‘the full train’ and Rapido has announced that they will making five items!

Will you be able to pick some more winners this year?

OK…stop working and get quirking! You have until 18.00 on Thursday 30 December 2021 to vote.

We aim to publish the results in the usual Poll Team format as soon as we can on 1 January 2022 – look for the title: Results – The Quirky Poll 2021.

Merry Christmas and a Safe & Happy New Year to you all!

For next year's quirky list: the Bavarian AA I class (only one made) that had a retractable set of booster wheels driven by an extra cylinder, presumably based on cog railway thinking, and making it a 4-(2)-2-2. It ran for several years until damaged in an accident and rebuilt into a more convention 4-4-2.

Got to be Campbeltown  & Macrahanish .   I remember seeing this as a layout by Nigel MacMillan at Model Rail Scotland 1973 . What a tribute to him this would be ! The layout was in 2 halves which was a revelation ro a schoolboy . One side was the harbour at Campbeltown and the other I think the coal mine . Watched it for ages . It also had nice passenger coaches with open vestibules at the end . I'd buy this and have a small cameo layout .

Hello Clive

Noted that you are 'only joking' but if anyone wants to suggest any items for 2022, please write here or PM me direct if you prefer.

We can't make a promise that your choice will go in, but it will be 'given a fair hearing'.

Ivor ran in "the top left-hand corner of Wales" if I remember the programme intro correctly.  The top left-hand corner of Wales was definitely LMS terratory.

With the Broad Gauge, would these be re-scaled away from OO to use the same track (but need new scenery & buildings), or stay at OO and need new track. If  I fear that if the track issue isn't sorted (including dual gauge to deal with running-rights) then very, very few models would sell.

Hello Denys

The Quirky Poll is - as noted - 'a little bit of Christmas fun'.

However, there is a 'serious side' to it in that we ask you to only vote on items that you would realistically intend to buy and that a number of earlier high pollers have been announced.

Our assumption would be that - if a maker went into Broad Gauge - suitable track would be made available and that might well include dual gauge to 'broaden the market'.

The Brennan Monorail would, perhaps, be a greater challenge!:)

Just Steropes?

Not Hercules and Cyclops as well. There were three of them and Steropes wasn't even the first built.

Three 0-6-4T crane tanks were built – the first of which appeared in 1901. The loco chassis had 4'1½" wheels and were the same as the 850 class. They were numbered 16–18, and all were named ("Hercules", "Cyclops" and "Steropes" respectively). They rarely ventured out of Swindon works or Stafford Road works.

http://www.gwr.org.uk/nopanniers.html

It's a bit like calling the A1s the Flying Scotsman class whilst totally ignoring the first two.

This was the first built Hercules which is an apt name for something that lifted things up.

Also note it should be Sterope. Seems another GWR mistake with names (see 4969 Shrugborough Hall).

Hello Jason

Thanks for the information. I'm not sure why we have only listed the one, but it might be that it was a 'voter suggestion' subsequent to the 2019 Quirky Poll.

We listed it last year under the same title but had no comments then as far as I recall.

The video on the Brighton and Rottingdean is one of mine, so I'd definitely buy one of those. I guess the gauge in 4mm would be 009-74-9? I'll let the manufacturer figure that one out.

Actually, I have a couple of 3D-printed VER cars that fit on Kato chassis, and they look pretty neat. If Peco/Kato are looking for another collaboration...

(For next year) How about NBR No. 55 in its (disputed) Royal Stuart tartan livery as a Crampton, before it was rebuilt in 1863 to a conventional single? Including as many as affordable of its 1850 Royal Train coaches as can be documented.

Cramptons start as quirky, and then a tartan livery!

Unfortunately I've only found fragments. There's a retrospectively-painted colour plate (opposite p77, painted by the author) in Hamilton Ellis's "Four Main Lines", publ. George Allen & Unwin in 1950 before ISBN. This has crept into the LNER Society's web-page, and  https://nbrstudygroup.co.uk/nbrsg/nrs_catalogue.php under liveries, both giving the same date (1850) and location (Dunbar) as the Ellis book, but without mentioning any doubts, or that it's not a painting contemporary with the event

However SteamIndex  https://www.steamindex.com/locotype/nbrloco.htm contains the text

"... Here one has the choice of accepting [John] Thomas or Ellis: the former calls No. 55 The Queen, whilst the latter terms No. 57 The Queen. Herein Ellis wins (for the time ebing). No. 55  was a Crampton 2-2-2-0 supplied by E.B. Wilson. with 16½ x 20in outside cylinders and Gooch valve gear); Both Dow and Ellis (North British) claim that the Crampton was painted in Royal Stuart tartan, but Thomas questions this, although Rutherford appears to accept this delightful concept and Ellis quotes a source (Ellis page 17). Thomas notes that No. 55 was rebuilt several times. Ellis has a painting of the Crampton in its tartan livery facing page 77 in his Four main lines. ..."

My square brackets and bold/italics. I've not been able to check the above links work in this post, although all came up on the first page in a Google search of 'NBR Locomotive 55 Tartan Livery Crampton'.

The livery feels like something that could be true, but it also feels like a splendid yarn that people want to believe. The sources do not dispute that No 55 was used on one occasion to pull the Royal Train.

The SteamIndex biography of Crampton has a miniature version of Ellis's painting at the top.
